I did a release of liability on my car because I gave it to someone in trade for work they did on another car. We tried to do the paperwork for selling it to him, but it never worked out because the car needed to be smogged, then he let his brother take it, etc. etc. But I did file a release of liability on it later.
Now I get this damn photo ticket in the mail and it’s asking for the information of who I sold it to, his blood type, first born, etc. I don’t know all that!!! %#X@%!!! Why didn’t they see that I did the release of liability!!! <insert super angry and frustrated emoticon here>
I’d have to go back and look at the thread, but you were given quite a few good suggestions to make sure you were released from ownership and liability, and IIRC there were two or three you should have done.
Nothing is going to stop a few tag ends of things from coming your way, like this, but it would be nice to have some absolute “no longer my problem” paper to, say, staple to the ticket and mail back. I’m not sure if your release of liability qualifies.
If the next event is a cop knocking on your door to ask about a fatal hit-and-run, you’re really going to wish you had that absolute document. I don’t think a few hundred spent a lawyer’s way to make sure this is straightened out would be a bad investment. Call it idiot tax.
