Help finding a book

I read a book in sixth grade, and it was very weird to me at the time, and I’d like to find it again. I can remember a few things about it:

-There was some kind of penpal thing between the main character and someone else, I think they sent cassette tapes of their voices to each other, and I think that one of the characters was American and the other was Australian

-One of the characters gets transformed into a soundwave or something, or trapped on the cassette recorder?

-The other character threatens to turn off the cassette or erase his tape or something.

Any ideas?

When were you in sixth grade? It’s an alarmingly uninformative gauge without a year.

I don’t know what book it is but is sounds interesting, like something I’d recommend to young readers.

The seemed old already which is why I didn’t bother mentioning that part, the book seemed like it was from the 70’s or so. The beginning was typical young adult and I remember being mildly disturbed that then penpal turned sadistic when the main character became trapped on audio tape, suddenly he went from being the main character’s friend to someone threatening to delete him.
