So I recently acquired my first smart phone – Android based (an HTC Amaze, if that’s relevant). Yay, me. The associate in the T-Mobile store assured me that transferring music from my Mac to the phone was a simple matter of “drag 'n drop”.
Well, no. (and seriously, did anyone think that Apple and Google would shake hands and play nice?)
Step 1: according to HTC’s help guide, the transfer requires software on the Mac called “Android File Transfer”. Downloaded it, plugged the phone in via USB, and AFT said “no Android device detected”
Step 2: called T-Mobile’s customer service number. They said hmmm…the problem is probably that AFT is looking for a micro-SD card on your phone, and can’t find one. Go buy one.
Step 3: so I went to my local T-Mobile store, and was all set to make the purchase. When I told the associates there why, they said that the info I was given was poppycock: no SD card was needed (although they gave me a free one, returned by a customer). What I needed was more software: something called DoubleTwist for the Mac, and its companion app for the phone called AirSync. DoubleTwist apparently reads my iTunes library and makes it available for transfer, and AirSync reaches out and gets it via WiFi (DT also works with a USB cable, too).
So I downloaded the software (cheap, fortunately). Imported my iTunes playlists into DT and hit the sync button. Data was moved.
Step 4: Now we’re getting somewhere! I have music on my phone! Except…it’s not organized into playlists; it’s just an undifferentiated list of 1000+ songs. This is not good.
Step 5: Tried resyncing various different ways: changed the target from the phone’s internal memory to the SD card; transferred via USB cable…nothing seems to help.
I could manually organize the music into playlists from the phone end (a tedious task), but first I thought I’d come here and see if anyone knows what I’m doing wrong or has a better idea.
A related question: after all these sync attempts I seem to have duplicate and triplicate versions of some songs. And I’m not sure whether a particular song is on the SD card, the internal memory, or both. How can I manage my phone’s memory – inspect the contents of both drives, and delete things? (My phone’s software only gives me the opportunity to wipe the internal memory clean, which seems drastic, and nothing that would let me wipe the SD card)
