This is probably fairly icky, but. It’s everywhere. It’s stuck to my wooly blanket. There’s a strand down the sleeve of my favorite sweatshirt. It’s stuck to the back of my SO’s winter coat. It’s woven into the dust cover on my computer chair. I pick it off every single shirt I wear.
It’s my own hair. It doesn’t come off in clumps or anything, and I don’t leave great tufts on everything I touch, like my cat. But from the amount of long auburn strands of hair I pick off my clothing and bedding, I’d swear I shed like a golden retriever.
I’m not an overly neat person, but my clothes and bedding are well laundered. I brush my hair once or twice a day and am a big fan of ponytails. I don’t know what other info I can give that might be relevant to finding a solution to my problem, but I’m hoping for some advice. It’s gross, it’s irritating, and while I’m very used to being caught in public covered in cat or dalamtion fur because of a few loving critters who are even less attached to their fur than I am, it’s more embarrassing when it’s my own hair.
Maybe I’m only noticing it so much because my hair is longer than it’s been since I was a small child (it reaches the small of my back), but it’s driving me nuts lately. What can I do, short of cutting it all off, to keep my hair out of my way? Anyone else with long hair have this problem, or am I just a hairy wierdo?
Everyone sheds and I’ve noticed my hair loss is greatest during spring and autumn. I have read it is normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. Maybe you just notice yours because they are long and relatively dark.
Hormones, some diseases, medications and hair treatments can cause extra hair loss, but you didn’t mention any of these things. Ponytails if they are too tight can pull extra hair out.
Your hair sounds beautiful and the only thing I can suggest is to brush it more often to catch as many as possible before they fall.
I have long hair, and have a lot of the problems you mentioned. I always figured I just notice the hair more, since my hair is long and also pretty dark. I just took the stray hairs as a price of having longer hair. I know it can be a pain in the butt, however I just treat the shed hair as any other household chore. Regularly removing it from the vacuum cleaner beater bar (be nice), and my car’s seat back (seems to be the worst for this). On fabric chairs I regularly use in the house, I keep a blanket over the back, to make hair removal easier. I suppose, I just treat my hair and the prevention of its accumulation, a lot like I would a pet. Cleaning covers and such more often, seems to help in preventing the hair from weaving its way into things. I do notice a lot less hair, when I finger comb my hair in the shower with conditioner, and with pony tails, so not sure what to suggest there.
I have seen products in beauty supply stores, claiming to help reduce hair shedding. I’ve never tried them though, since I see my hair shedding as normal, as mentioned, between 50 to 100 hairs daily.
I also have long hair, and I experience the same thing - you’re not a hairy weirdo.
The worst is the shower drain - yuck. The funniest is when I notice a strand hanging from my SO’s mustache. I always get a kick out of that (then I pull it off. I don’t let him walk atround like that).
Umm… it took me a minute, reading this, to realize you were complaining about head hair, not body hair. You see I shed, too. There is nowhere in my apartment that doesn’t have my hairs on it. (I think there are hair gremlins that move it about evenly from the bed, to be honest.) Now, I am balding, and that’s a factor, but, by far, most of my hair is from my back or chest, and all I can do is vacuum once a week, or so. (And try to keep it out of the food I’m cooking.) You have my sympathy, but no clear-cut suggestions.
I shed. I just try to pick up the hair wherever I can.
Get a bunch of good lint brushes or those roll tape things. Have one in your purse, one in your car glove box, one at the office, a couple at home, etc.
Find the vaccuum attachment that works best to pick up hair. Mine is the hard brush type thing.
Get one of those drain cover things that lets water through but not hair for your bathtub/shower drains. They’re wonderful!
I knew there was an advantage to having furry critters around – they shed, so it hides your shedding. I’ve never worried about cat hair, and the dog hair is far worse (we could knit sweaters after sweeping up downstairs, I swear) so my shedding isn’t really noticeable even to me except in the shower.
