Help! I think I have a trojan problem

Not that kind…

There is a program called AcebotMainThread running on my system, constantly trying to connect when I am offline. It loads programs like scrsvr.exe, alevir.exe and Brasil.exe; which may be fake names for whatever process is running.

It interrupts other programs, and slows down my surfing. How do I get rid of this nuisance? AdAware doesn’t seem to help, and my Norton anti-virus program crashes when I try to scan.

My system is a Dell Optiplex 500Mhz, running Win98, the rest is standard equipment.

There is an IRC backdoor trojan called AceBot. Check the Symantec Security Response page to see if you have the entries in your Registry. It also contains the steps to remove the trojan from your system.

Hope you have a good registry backup

After you remove the trojan, try using a program like Black Ice to stop the buggers from getting in there in the first place.

First, download Zone Alarm and have it running. Then, run msconfig to see if that’s how it launches itself. If not, you need to dive into the registry.
