Help identify movie/show based on scene

I clearly remember this scene from the HBO show Rome:

Caesar is riding his chariot into the Triumph with his face painted red, with some dude (probably a slave) sitting behind him holding a wreath over his head while incessantly whispering to him sentiments like “You are just a man. You are not a god.” etc…

I just now* finished watching a marathon of all 22 episodes of the show (which included two different Triumphs) but the whispering thing never happened. Everything else about Caesar’s Triumph is exactly how I remembered, except the whispering.

Did I hallucinate this? Or did I mix up the memory with some other Ancient Rome show or movie? Maybe Gladiator, with Russell Crowe?

*Clearing off space from the DVR, I recorded all 22 episodes last August when HBO ran a marathon. It took me nine months to get around to watching it, but holy shit was that worth it. Such a great show; even better than I remember it.

I’ve never seen Rome, but googling your quote I see that (at least the way you phrased it) it’s based on a bible quote (Ezekiel 28-9), but I can’t seem to find it in a movie.
How about 300 or Ben Hur?

Based on my memory, I’m thinking it was from something I saw in or around the mid-2000s. That’s why I’m thinking maybe Gladiator. Ben Hur is right out, but 300 isn’t a bad guess.

If you google your quote and let autofill do it’s thing you’ll get some variations of it. Since it seems to be based on a bible verse you probably didn’t make it up, but if you play around with it you might be able to figure it out. OTOH, even using some keywords I couldn’t come up with.

It wasn’t “come back with your shield…or on it” was it?. I know, I know, totally different but it’s got the same sort of weight to it and it’s the only line I remember from 300. (and it was when they were going off to war, not winning a chariot race).

Rome was an amazing show.

Been years since I’ve seen it, but could it have been Quo Vadis (1951)? I remember a scene of Caesar’s Triumph.

And of course, it was referenced at the end of Patton with George C. Scott’s poignant voice-over narration.

“For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.”

Unfortunately I don’t remember the actual words, just the sentiment. I found it interesting, and I think I remember reading a thread here on the dope about it and someone commenting on it. Since I don’t generally participate in movie threads (I wait for cable) I figured it was Rome, but no.

Repeatedly whispering “all glory is fleeting” would totally fit my memory.
More info if it helps: As a general rule I greatly prefer modern movies, so it very likely is no older than late 90s for release date.

Rome, season 1, episode 10.

Well, as I said in the OP, I just watched all 22 episodes of Rome, and the whispering wasn’t in it.

You can see for yourself on youtube: Caesar’s Triumph. (His chariot scenes start at 2:37.)
