Help identify this book, please

My walking companion was trying to describe a book to me. All she could remember:

  1. The protagonist is a girl with two uncles.

  2. Her mother dies.

  3. She thinks “sitting shiva” is “sitting shiver.”

I haven’t read it, so I can’t identify it from these clues. How about you?
