I recently read part of a book series, sometime last year. I can’t remember what the name of the series is, who the author is, or the name of any of the books, so I can’t finish it.
What I do remember is it takes place far in the future, on Earth. To start off with, life is perfect, with everyone just having to think about what they want, and nanites in the air and in their body makes it happen. Some people chose to become fanciful beasts, like dragons. Others became a living cloud of nanites, which would allow them to stay at a certain age forever. Such people had a blue aura put around them to show they were nanites.
The ultimate controller of the nanites is a robot called Mother, whom is in turn controlled by a high council. This council has a split early on in the first book, which leads to the failure of the nanites. This causes a lot of trouble, including people caught on the surface of the sun, at the bottom of the ocean, and inside volcanos. Those who had themselves made into a body of nanites turns into dust, while those who changed themselves into dragons are stuck this way. Everyone splits into two groups, one following the council members who want things back the way they were, and the other group who is led by the side who doesn’t want things to continue the way they were. The leader of the latter keeps his key that helps control mother in a pouch inside his scrotom, and has his own harem of women he created.
The bad guys routinely use what nanites they still have control over to turn people into orcs.
Any clue what this series might be?
