I’ve had a snippet of a tune playing mentally for days now and the problem is I can’t figure out what it the hell it is.
There’s little to provide other than it’s very similar to “Maneater” by Hall and Oates in terms of rhythmic feel and it may be in the same key or use same melodic intervals. Almost certainly early 80s and with a sort of late night feel to it, maybe slightly hushed vocals and could have a saxophone line though I may be blending it with Maneater. I’m sure it was somewhat of a hit, I’ve certainly heard it before but can’t think of a single lyric.
Methinks you haven’t seen the magic of Straight Dope “name that tune” threads. We’ve gotten the answer on far, far vaguer clues here. This one is positively chock full of info!
“Part Time Lover” is the obvious answer and the first one to come to mind for me, as well.
Another possibility is “Modern Love” by David Bowie.
I’d lay some money that it is one of these two songs. I would have definitely gone with “Part Time Lover” absent more info, but the whispered vocals and sax parts make me think it may be the Bowie song, though the Stevie Wonder song is much more similar musically to me.
Listening through, no idea where I’d come up with hushed vocal track… It’s belted out pretty decently at parts. And the sax thing was indeed just me mentally combining both songs. I find it kind of hilarious how similar these tracks sound, at least to me.
Just for fun, I just checked, and if you just type “song that sounds like Maneater” into Google, it’s certainly not just you. (And, like I said, I called it the “obvious answer” because it also sounds quite similar to me.)
Funny story- that’s not at all the song in my mind as revealed but I just took a listen to that track and it’s another one that I could never identify in a million years but I absolutely get that melody stuck in my head occasionally.
