Help ID'ing a movie seen on TV

Some time ago I saw part of a film on television and I’d like help finding out what it was called.

I most definitely saw it BEFORE Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ came out, by a couple of years maybe. I’m unsure as to exactly how long. But it was a film about the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus, and the characters were not speaking English, or, in most cases, languages I recognized. I’m not fluent in Latin, but I could recognize a little of that, when spoken by those I’m assuming were the Romans.

Because of the language I can’t quote dialogue, but being familiar with the story I could follow the events portrayed.

The one that stands out is something not portrayed in the Bible, but it was kind of neat none the less. The Ascension of Jesus which is at the end of the film section I saw, showed his arrival in Heaven, where a crowd was gathered to greet him. Standing in the front of the crowd, with a smile on his face, was the thief who was crucified to the one side of Jesus.

Maybe this was one of those religious films made by one denomination or other, that used to be sent around to churches. It isn’t all that old though.

Does anyone recognize this?
