Last night I was trading cars with a friend for the upcoming weekend so I was adjusting mirrors and seats and basically settling in. We both have satellite radio, but pretty different tastes. Before I pulled out of drive I put on either Siriusly Sinatra, or 40’s Junction, both favorites of mine. The friend’s auto has a different display than mine so while I was listening to the song from BLAST FROM THE PAST, my friend was asking about the title: Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.
I never knew how that particular song was spelled, but when I saw it I was reminded of the song Mairzy Doats because of the similarity in how the lyrics are spelled phonetically rather than how they would be pronounced in normal speech. I was also reminded of** Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida**, which has a similar phonetic spelling.
But while showing my friend Mairzy Doats, I was reminded of an old thread from before or around 2004. It was Dopers re-writing song lyrics with very literal (and somewhat obscure) word substitutions. For example, I specifically recall someone writing:
Female equines consume grains (don’t recall how he or she suggested the grain was oats),
Female ungulates also consume grains,
However, kids consume clinging vines (or some such)
Another one I halfway remember is the Who song: (conveyed something like)
The singer antecedent to azure orbs.
I always thought that particular thread was a great example of how smart, fun, and cleaver the Straightdope Message Boards could be. I would very much appreciate it if someone could provide a link to that thread. (I do not seem to be able to search for it at all.)
