I am looking for something to drink that has these aspects:
1 - Hot drink
2 - No caffeine or other stimulant
3 - Not a decaffeinated version of a drink (no decaf coffee or tea)
4 - No caloric value
5 - Must not taste like herbal tea.
Red/Raspberry Zinger tea (Brand unimportant) is an herbal tea that doesn’t taste like one. It tastes a bit like…umm…hot Kool-Aid. Sounds weird, but it’s great. Good cold, too.
It doesn’t have a perfumed or herbal taste, it’s dark in colour, flavoursome and satisfying. i’ve not tried flavoured versions, I’m happy with the normal stuff.
I find flavoured and fruit teas disappointing 'cos they don’t taste as intense as they smell.
I usually drink plain hot water in the evening. It’s healthy and cheap.
Green tea has caffeine, but some kinds have less than others. There’s a Japanese green tea called “hoji-cha” or “hoji-tea” which has very little caffeine. There are probably Chinese and other equivalents.
I just ordered some rooiboos due to GrinnaGirla suggestion. The web address you suggested lets people post opinions for the stuff which ranged from sort of like black tea but not as harsh to tastes like mud and straw. I think there must be a great deal of variation in this stuff but most reviews were on the good side.
Green tea has caffiene which I don’t want late at night.
hyperjes I had a horrible rasberry tea about 2 years ago and I’m still not ready to try it again.
what is Vegimite?
Apple cider would have calories
never considered hot water which does fit my requirements.
I drink hot water with fresh lemon juice, although occasionally I add sugar, which negates the calorie-free thing.
There are herbal teas which aren’t tea-ish - chamomile and peppermint come to mind. I’m not fond of herbal blends like the Celestial Seasonings ones (is that what they’re called? All of a sudden that looks wrong) but a straight one-herb tea can be very good.
Kanicbird, have to warn you in advance though. I didn’t like rooiboos at first. It grew on me (no pun intended). Now, I drink it when I need caffeine free.
And if I am not mistaken, caffeine free and decaf are two different things. Decaf implies that there is caffeine in it, but it has been removed. Caffeine free naturally doesn’t have caffeine in it. If even a little caffeine bothers you at night, then don’t try decaf products.
Exactly why I listed my requirements as I did. My Dr. told be to avoid decaf. products, caffiene OK, no caffiene OK but if it had caffiene and it was removed then NO.
Thanks for the warning, I sort of got that from the reviews. I ordered the 4 oz (smallest non sample size). I figured it would be eought to allow it to grow on me but not too much that it would sit on my shelf for years.
