Okay, it’s driving me nuts…the commercials for the new Robin Williams film, Death to Smoochy, feature at the end an incredibly familiar piece of music. He’s dancing on some kind of stage while it’s playing. I can’t remember what the music is, and it’s driving me crazy. Can someone put me out of my misery?
“Joy”, performed by Apollo 100 (aka Tom Parker), released in 1972.
Written by Johann Sebastian Bach, under the better known title “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, which is more commonly played at a much slower tempo as a church hymn.
Thank you…now, where else would I have heard it? (No, not church…) For some reason I associate it with an older rock band.
Maybe I have the memory connection wrong…I hate it when I can’t put a memory in context. Very unsettling.
I don’t know what song Elvis is talking about, but during the “Death to Smoochy” trailer, I also hear “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five.
Addendum to this question: I can recall a version of the same song (“Joy”) being played on rock stations on the radio, performed on electric guitar. I never knew the name of the song or the artist. Of course, now that I know the title of the song, I find that it’s been recorded about a jillion times, and I still can’t find it.
So, does anyone know who may have recorded a version on electric guitar, one that may have been played on rock stations?
