Help me feed my boyfriend

There’s also a remedy that works great (for me and everyone I’ve given it to) named Emetrol. I don’t know how it works, but it does.
It contains a combination of sugars, that’s it. But, it works.

Years ago, I lost 50 pounds during a prolonged illness (I’m six foot, and got down under 125 at one point). One of the products they used was Ensure. They’re palatable, fairly easy to drink and keep down, and best of all, they’re only six or eight ounces apiece. A small portion makes for an attainable goal.

DOH! I just saw WhyNot’s post, which recommended the same product. My only excuse for not seeing it the first time is that it was in the lee of Turnbuckle’s.

My staples when I was sick as a kid was Rice Krispies in milk to eat, and cherry Kool Aid to drink. I would–and still do–eat chicken soup for a head cold, but I couldn’t stand hot food when I had a queasy stomach.

When I had the flu the Tashaboy gave me miso soup - it’s yummy. I get it at a Japanese food shop here in town for pretty cheap. I’d do the white miso, it’s easier on the stomach. When you get it, it comes with a packet of paste, and a packet of seaweed and other addatives - don’t bother adding the seaweed, as it’s strong-smelling and might actually nauseate anyone who is having stomach issues.

I dunno about everyone else, but regular miso soup in water or stock actually made me feel a lot better, stomach-wise.

I hope your boyfriend feels better!

Thank you for all the advice and good wishes.

Bananas, chicken soup and applejuice seemed to help, and he is getting better, though still weak as a kitten, poor thing.

There is no place to buy asian food nearby, sadly (I’d try those soups if there was) and the kitchen I have acces to is very limited, so I’m going with what I can buy. I’ll see about getting som chicken meat when he stops going white at the mention of meat.

He has mono btw, if anyone was curius.

Again, thanks. You guys have been a big help.

If it’s mono, then the nausea should go away pretty quickly, I think, and you should be able to get him to eat more food fairly soon. I remember not being very hungry, so I ate lots of small portions spread out throughout the day.

In addition to what others have mentioned, try puddings or custards and cottage cheese, if he likes it.

Jello.

Excuse me - “flavored gelatin”.

It’s mostly water held together with protein. A bit of flavoring and sugar. Assuming he’s not diabetic and he’s not eating much the sugar won’t hurt.

It’s not a LOT of protein, but it’s good for getting fluid into someone who is tired of drinking, drinking, drinking.

On the plus side, when nauseated, it comes up almost as easy as it goes down (ditto for bananas). But hopefully he won’t have to worry about that.

Just wanted to let you know that at least one person laughed at this.

Can he stomach Slim Fast or Ensure? Both of those have a lot of nutrients and calories in them. (My doctor suggested I drink one every day to help put on weight.)

The French Vanilla Slim Fasts aren’t bad if they’re well-chilled. I don’t suggest the powdered mix-it-yourself version. French Vanilla Ensure isn’t quite as good, but I’ve heard that the chocolate is pretty tasty.

Have you tried liquor?

Sunspace’s idea of smoothies is good, and he could drink them through one of those thick straws with a bend in them. Much easier for sick people then eating with a spoon. Sometimes the association is eatingutensils=eating food=nauseaus. Straws are not asociated with food, but with drinks, so they are tolerated better.

Can you get ahold of any flan? I can get cups of this brand of flan at a store nearby here, (pretty decent flan) so maybe you could as well? Egg custard might be a way to slip him some protein, and it’s very mild, yet tastey and wholesome. How about Silk, or yogurt? Apparently they now make soy yogurt as well. Even some pudding cups would get him a bit of protein. Do you think he could manage a small bit of a mild cheese with some crackers and broth?

Adding, serve the broth in a cup so he can sip it. Offer him just a half cup, and if he finishes it, give him more. Offer him broth or something similar fairly often, so he’s taking in nourishment several times a day, this will add up. Maybe you can do this about the time he rouses and needs to use the bathroom if you have the pattern predicted?

Hey, that’s a thought! I wonder if there is any pasturized egg nog in your local supermarket yet, and if he’d tolerate it at all? It’s a drink, and it has protein in it. It might be worth a shot? Good luck, get well soon Septima’s boyfriend. Mr. Clawbane sends his good wishes too, he’s been through mono himself.

BUMP How’s your boyfriend doing Septima?

Oh, he’s much better, thank you for your concern

He’s up and about now, though he’s still weak, and hasn’t returned to work yet. He can keep down normal foods, but eats maybe half of what he did before. He gets better every day, so I’m not worried anymore.

I really can’t thank everybody enough. It really helped to have suggestions and more experience than mine to draw on.
