I hope I’m not combining two different titles in my memory; but I need you guys’ help in finding a book I read several years ago (Less than 10, more than 3).
IIRC it was a non fiction book written by a female author who told her story about living through and escaping from the Dresden firebombings in WWII. A couple of memories I have of the story are:
- she was raped by German solders, and found out how to keep herself from getting beaten and raped frequently was to manipulate the solders so that she could only be claimed by the highest ranking soldier, thus making her off limits to the lower ranked soldiers.
*I seem to have a memory of her talking about the long lines to get bread.
*When the firebombings occurred she was able to hide underground
*the last part of the book is about her journey to catch a train to reach a safe place.
