help me find a dress!

no, i’m not coming out of the closet. i just remembered a particular dress that my girlfriend used to have. she was from new york city, but we lived in texas at the time (tyler) and they seemed to be fairly in vogue for church attendees. they were also worn by teen to mid thirties women. they were generally black with huge floral designs on them. iirc, they had short sleeves or maybe really short sleeves with a frill around them. i remember reading in the ‘Godfather’ by Mario Puzo about an italian guy whose wife started wearing something that was described in a way that made it sound as if it was something that Italian women wore. is this limp description any help?

Would it look something like this:

(except this one doesn’t have flowers on it).

The type of dress you describe sounds like what I like to call Church Dresses. Nicer than everyday but not formal. A few years back, dresses that were made of Georgette (a “seet throughish material”) or crepe (kind of scratchy, but still draped) with large flowers were really popular. In fact, I have a few still. i purchased them at Old Navy and Target. They do have a bit of a 40’s look to them. They also have a sash at the waist.

Your description is kind of not helpful, so I would suggest going through online stores to see if you recognize anything.

I can recommend:

www.chadwicks.com

www.casualcorner.com

These stores tend have more of that style of dress as opposed to super trendy teenage stuff.

thanks for looking, but these weren’t it.
take the dress in the second link. shorten it to about knee length or a bit lower. put some drapey (?) ruffles on the shoulders for sleeves. make it black with HUGE flowers on it. sorry about the crummy description!
thanks again

Can I ask why you want it?

Does SHE??? even want it?

It either out of style, or out of her age bracket now.

Thirdly, if she got rid of it, she doesnt want it.

Furthermore, most women today do not wear dresses, even to church anymore.

Anyways, I can tell you right now, that you are not going to find it in any retail store - no dress stays in style for a year. Not many stores even carry dresses anymore or have very limited selection, and no store will carry a dress for more than one season.

The only possible place you EVER!! will find it is in a second hand store, resale shop, or the Salvation Army - yet another reason why she would not want it or wear it.

Your best bet, (after a resale shop) is to go to a seamstress, and have her make one.

If you have a color photo of it, any seamstress can make one.

But I still dont know why you, or she, would want it.

The dresses I got a few years ago did have HUGE flowers (about the size of a dinner plate). They were everywhere a few years ago. I find that if there is a dress I like, buy a bunch because in a year’s time you won’t find it again.

As for Women not wearing dresses much more, maybe its a regional thing. I’m in Texas and loads of women here still wear dresses to church.

Yes, a seamstress can easily make the dress that you like, but you may have a hard time finding fabric with huge flowers on it.

I don’t know how huge the flowers are and what the coulour of the flowers should be. However, let check this link out.

There are 419 matches for floral dress in women clothing. Hoping that you will find it.

Good luck!

thanks! i’ll check this one out!

thanks! i’ll check this one out!

I’m thinking that you may be talking about knock-offs of designs by Christian Lacroix. They were usually black, had large cabbage roses on them and puffy sleeves and skirts. I’m also from Texas and these were a huge hit all throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s, especially with the church crowd. I’ve been trying to dig up a picture, but so far, google hasn’t given me anything specifically to match this. I’ll keep trying.

the phrase cabbage roses certainly strikes a chord. thanks for looking, hopefool.
