About 15 years ago I purchased 2 felted wool beanies (watchmen’s caps, dock workers caps) from Burlington Coat Factory. The caps have no tags and no identifiable marks. I have lost one of the caps and the one I have left is starting to get holes in it. I would be grateful if anybody could help me locate a source for more of these.
Here is a picture of the remaining cap: (Warning dead deer in photo)
Also, if any knitters out there are confident they could knit something this fine, I would gladly pay you and do the felting myself. The pre-felted hat would probably need to big enough for a basketball.
This etsy seller might be able to do what you want. The pics look a little odd as the mannequin heads used to display hats are usually 60-70% of life size. I’m not sure why, but that seems to be the usual practice.
It looks like it was knit in a double rib and then felted (although I’m on my phone and can’t get great resolution) - that’s what would account for the thickness of the fabric.
Anyway, see if you can buy one cheap - if not I can knit it up for you.
Concurring with alice on the construction (2x2 rib, felted). I’ve made my husband some very similar hats, and those suckers are warm. (In a pinch, you can use one to carry a just-out-of-the-oven round casserole dish to a potluck. In case that ever comes up.)
Pretty sure I accidently just made one of those for myself. Hand knit by me pure wool hat + too long in the dryer = smaller, thicker, close fitting cap.
