I have a friend who likes good port. I would like to buy a nice vintage from about the year he was born. I know nothing of Port, but do know that some years yield a better vintage than others. One from the year of his birth would be great, but I know that that particular year may not have been a good vintage, so sometime close to the year he was born is fine.
He was born in 1964. I can afford to spend around 200 US on this. Also, I know that some names are better than others (DOW for instance is good, I’m told.)
You are pretty much out of luck with his birth year. 1964 was an iffy year, and none of the major houses declared a vintage that year. Most ports produced that year are well past their peaks. 1963, on the other hand…
Go for one produced the same year he was conceived, maybe?
Port isn’t quite my expertise, but I’ll share a deal that I got recently if it’ll help. I think it’s a deal anyway. I recently picked up a case of Taylor Fladgate 1995 vintage port. It was a case (12) of splits (half bottles) and was about your price range. It was $20/bottle and came in a nice wood crate.
I haven’t tried it yet, but my pal who is extremely into port tells me (repeatedly) that this is about the best port he’s ever had. I think he bought at least three cases of this for himself.
I’m looking forward to sharing this my daughter many years from now and telling her that I bought it in the year she was born. This assumes of couse that I have the willpower not to drink it all in the next 20 years.
