Port Wines Commonly Available

Can anyone recommend a decent Port that might be commonly available in a well-stocked liquor store?

I’ve only tried Port once or twice long ago and I’m pretty sure they were always ruby ports. I don’t think I’ve tried a tawny variety, but I’m open to it.

Price is not a big deal, but I wouldn’t want to spend hundreds on a bottle.

Fonseca, Grahams and Taylor Fladgate are the most common brands.

Vintage ports are quite expensive and are generally north of $100 and easily in the $200 range and up.

Late Bottle Vintages are generally in the $20 to $30 range and probably your best bet.

Ports in the low price range are indistinguishable from Manischevitz fortified wines and probably not worth having. But, as with most booze, only the first glass really matters. Once you’re into your third or fourth pour, you’re into the endurance sport of it.
