I’m moving to Albany, NY in the next couple weeks from Canada to live there temporarily for 6 months. I’ve got managment experience (lot’s of useful skills!), I have good grades, and am a workaholic. I’ll work 16 hour days if needed. Let me first say this; the US government is STUPID.
For the past several months I have been searching for a job there and have found several places that seem interested in hiring me. No places, however are willing to hire me until I fill out an application/come in for an interview. Not a problem right? Wrong,… I need a work visa in order to work in the states. And the processing time just happens to be a convienient 90 days or so. Just Super.
I leave for NY at the beginning of september, so that is when I will be available for interviews and such, but in the case that I do get hired, guess what! Everyone has to wait 90 days before I am able to get a stupid work visa! Shitty for me, shitty for my employer, they don’t want to wait.
And if that isn’t bad enough, I just got informed the other day that my employer has to post the job I am applying for in the newspaper/everywhere and hold interview for American applicants and submit some kind of report that explains why none of them were good enough for the job and why I have the skills to fill that position. Who the hell would want to go throught that trouble when they could just hire an American?
Which leaves me with only a couple choices, either A) Find a job that pays under the table (whatever that may be) B) Live there for 6 months without working, or C) Get a really good idea from one of you to help me out. Although its possible for me to do “B” and live with someone I would really be happy if i could do “A” or “C” instead.
So if anyone of you guys have gone through this situation in the past, any help would be muchly appreciated. Or tips on how to get a job that pays under the table would be good too.
