I do recall the elderly man’s face being in 3/4 turn, with a thousand yard stare so realistic that I wanted to reach out and catch him when he fell.
But I can’t find it.

It also illustrates a mistake you might be making in your search. Twig bundles and hyper-realism are very popular with the pencil-drawing set. Are you sure this was a color painting?
It was definitely in color. Maybe not a painting. That’s why I put “illustration” in the thread title. Might have been a colored pencil drawing.
The pencil drawing you linked to is pretty spectacular.
