I absolutely remember a quote by Pterry that was probably in one of his earlier Discworld books (say, before Witches Abroad or Men At Arms) that went something like this:
I’m rereading Pyramids (the obvious candidate) and it’s not in there (at least up to the bit where Teppic decides to go back to Djelibeybi. I know there’s a camel in Moving Pictures (and Jingo, but that’s probably too late into the series).
A) Does anyone else remember this quote?
B) Can anyone find it?
What I have found is from Pyramids:“You Bastard was thinking: there seems to be some growing dimensional instability here, swinging from zero to nearly forty-five degrees by the look of it. How interesting. I wonder what’s causing it? Let V equal 3. Let Tau equal Chi/4. cudcudcud Let Kappa/y be an Evil-Smelling-Bugger (* Renowned as the greatest camel mathematician of all time, who invented a math of eight-dimensional space while lying down with his nostrils closed in a violent sandstorm.) differential tensor domain with four imaginary spin co-efficients. . .” *
And then there’s Hodges-aargh, who is in Lords and Ladies. He’s the falconer, and keeps getting attacked by the birds he holds, and so tacks on a painful scream at the end of introducing himself.
And at one point when Teppic refers to You Bastard as a “bloody stupid” animal, You Bastard thinks “What’s he talking about, Bloody Stupid lives over in Tsort”.
There was also a named camel in Moving Pictures…
“We call it Evil-Minded Son of a Bitch,” said the newly-appointed Vice-President in Charge of Camels."
“That doesn’t sound like a name.”
" 'S a good name for this camel," said the handler fervently.
with a footnote later: Camels are far too intelligent to admit to being intelligent.
edit: and the line about how your name is what you introduce yourself as was definitely a Hodges-arrgh reference from Lord & Ladies.
I recently reread Lords and Ladies, and FWIW here’s the exact Hodgesaargh quote:
“Strictly speaking, Hodgesaargh wasn’t his real name. On the other hand, on the basis that someone’s real name is the name they introduce themselves to you by, he was definitely Hodgesaargh.” (p. 87 of US paperback edition)
I’ve been unable to find the camel name quote the OP is looking for in Google Books, which is usually the easiest way to pin down book quotes. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist though, as a full preview isn’t available for all pages of the various Discworld books.
