I need to find a coat pattern and maybe a shirt pattern for Dominic (age 8) that would be from the period that Pirates of the Caribbean was set in. Help?
Try www.costumes.org
Thsy have a lot of great information and costume patterns.
More specifically (this may help) I need to make a jacket similar to http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0325980/04_6520.jpg <—that one
Go to the pattern books at a fabric store, or department. There’s usually a good selection of costumes there.
Finding period stuff in children’s sizes is hard
There are usually plenty of Revolutionary War-era patterns available for children; the pattern books at Walmart (McCall’s and Simplicity, IIRC) have them towards the back. Pirates of the Caribbean is set in a vague period of time, but fangirls tend to place it in the 1720s for various reasons; Revolutionary patterns aren’t exact, but look close enough for costuming. You’ll have to add the extra-large cuffs on yourself, but that shouldn’t be hard; just cut and line a rectangle of fabric, attach to the pattern’s existing cuffs, and trim with frogs or braid to match Jack’s.
My son (5) has that jacket in red, bought from the Pirate Store at Disneyworld.
I don’t know how good a seamstress you are, but this thing does not look hard to do on a machine. The jacket is six pieces, three on the top (back and two sides) three for the skirt (back and two sides). Sleeves and collar. No darts or gathers in the darn thing. Braiding and buttons make it.
I have seen a pattern for the darn thing (he wears it all the time and is outgrowing it). Butterick, Simplicity, something that you pick up at the fabric store.
If you get really stuck, email me. I’ll trace the pattern out and send it to you. You’ll want to make it bigger - my son was three when it was bought. But it should give you a starting point.
http://www.sensibility.com has some fantastic links for historical costumes and patterns.
eBay!!! I’ve seen a lot of costumes for kids there.
Ooooh good tip, thanks!
Sanguine: no. Not ebay. I don’t want to buy a costume, I want to MAKE his costume.
(btw my previous comment was to racinchikki regarding the revolutionary war clothes)
I’m a decent seamstress… I ususally don’t use patterns though, I just see it in my head, cut, sew, and hope for the best. (like I did for this skirt thing)
Dangerosa: if you have a digital camera, and could lay out the coat a few different ways so I can see where the seams are and take a few pics that would be most excellent
Yeah, I can do that. It will be tomorrow though. If you can sew without a pattern, I think that will do fine. IIRC, your email address is in your profile, right?
yes it is
No rush, I have to finish my own before I start on his.
On its way.
Hooray! I should definitely be able to do something from those photos
