Well…very different. (And don’t even get me started on jazz)
I recommend Bantock’s luscious Hebridean Symphony of 1913, available in several versions on YouTube, or here…

You might like some of the stuff by The Lumineers.
James Bay has a new one called Let it go.
And this song by KOL. I love it.
Talahina SkyTwo songs popped into my mind. You’re probably familiar with both.
Someone I think as similar to KT Tunstall is Florence + The Machine: Dog Days Are Over
And in the classic rock vein, one hit wonder Ram Jam: Black Betty
I think of these both as incredibly sing-along sorts of songs.
If you like the bluesy sound of The Black Keys but wish they were heavier/groovier, try All Them Witches.
Muse- Super massive black hole
Black Keys and Alabama Shakes are covered, more to follow…
If you like Red Hot Chili Peppers you might also like Infectious Grooves - Punk It Up.
JEFF the Brotherhood. Liked 'em from the first time I heard Sixpack.
Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear is a fantastic mother-son duo.
My phone is being stupid so I can’t post a link, but please look them up. You will not be sorry.
I was NOT disappointed. Thanks!
Arc Angels, Bad Co. Here Comes Trouble, Chickenfoot, David Wilcox, Gary Moore, Our Lady Peace, Robert Cray
Ok, I went through every song listed here and picked out a bunch of songs i really liked:
Blackberry Smoke Too High
Rival Sons Electric Man
The Black Keys
Howling for you
16b horsepower for heaven’s sake
Thievery corporation Lebanese blonde
Richard Hawley Dark Road
Black Betty Ram Jam
Black Betty Spiderbait
Come with me now Kongos
Muse Supermassive Black Hole
Please, if you just posted a band and no song, I’d really appreciate it if you would post your favorite song of theirs. It’s hard to just pick a random song and hope I like it. I try listeninig to their “best hits” but sometimes that’s not always the best.
THANK YOU!
If you like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you could try Franz Ferdinand. IIRC, Pandora’s little summary called them “art damaged rock”, which I always found hilarious. “Take Me Out” is their most famous song; I also quite like “Matinee”.
You mentioned husky/deep female voices - though she’s not exactly obscure, do you like Lorde? Everyone knows “Royals”, but my favorite from her is probably “Buzzcut Season”. Her lyrics are particularly good.
I thought Rival Sons might have leaned a bit too heavy metal-ish for your tastes, but since you liked that one you might also like Black Pistol Fire and Monster Truck.
Zac Brown Band, featuring Chris Cornell – Heavy Is the Head
Chris Cornell – Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart
If you like KT Tunstall, just about guarantee that you will like the Cowboy Junkies album ‘The Trinity Session’ A Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band. They do a cover of Sweet Jane that is better than Lou Reeds original.
This youtube does not give it justice.
Because you liked Sixteen Horsepower and Richard Hawley, you might also like The Handsome Family - Weightless Again.
Since you seem to like dark alt-country-blues-ish stuff, I’ll also suggest Johnny Dowd - God Created Woman.
And for a lark, check out Whores of Tijuana - Pig Country. Stoner/doom stuff.
Okay. Drive-By Truckers
Zip City
Carl Perkin’s Cadillac
Two Dimes Down
Uncle Frank
Puttin’ People on the Moon
Used to be a Cop
Good rockin’ sing-a-longs. Try these, then explore on your own and be amazed!
Since you’re already a fan of “Renegade” by Styx, I’d give the rest of their catalog a look-see. I particularly like the Pieces of Eight and Paradise Theater albums. “Queen of Spades”, “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights),” and “Snowblind” are some of my favorite songs. (But I have like 26 songs on my Favorite Styx Songs playlist alone).
More “Who Knew Country Music Could Be So Good?” genre:
Blackie And The Rodeo Kings - Black Sheep
Corb Lund - Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier
Iris Dement - Our Town
