This is probably a long shot because of the paucity of information, but here goes.
A friend of mine* is looking for a copy of a poster his father used to have. It’s a long quote from one of Hitler’s less obviously fascist political speeches in which he says something like “Our country is in danger from the Communists on the left and the fascists on the right.” My friend believes this was once a pretty common poster in dorm rooms in the 1960’s. Has anyone ever seen a poster like this or, alternately, does anyone know the quote in question to help me Google for it more effectively?
Good Luck. I asked a similar question five years ago, and didn’t get jack beans for a response. I know that this “quote” was used in a “Billy Jack” movie, but I still don’t know that it has ever been sourced to an actual Hitler speech.
“The streets of our country are in turmoil. The universities are filled with students rebelling and rioting. Communists are seeking to destroy our country. Russia is threatening us with all her might. And the republic is in danger - yes - danger from within and without. We need law and order! Without law and order our nation cannot survive”
I have found references to a red poster bearing this quotation that was popular in the 60s. I can find no photo of it on-line, nor any place you can buy it. It appears it may be a somewhat rare collectible now, so you may have a hard time finding it.
The quote is fictitious. http://www.bartleby.com/73/155.html
I did see the poster as kid at the public library in the early 70’s. Also, heard it in the Billy Jack movie. But I’m still surprised how much it’s still cited while Googling…
I do not know if this helps, but back in 1969, Meldon E. Levine, Princeton graduate gave his commencement address at Harvard Law School using the fake Hitler quote “The streets of our country are in turmoil. The universities are filled with students rebelling and rioting. Communists are seeking to destroy our country. Russia is threatening us with her might. And the republic is in danger. Yes, danger from within and without. We need la and order! … without law and order our nation cannot survive…”
Meldon E. Levine’s address was picked up and ran in the papers with the fake Hitler quote like the Los Angeles Times on July 2, 1969.
Years later the speech was unmasked as a fake.
Despite that it appears in the movie, BILLY JACK (1971), Senator Edmund Muskie (Demo. VP candidate ) and U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas used the fake Hitler quote. Later, Muskie and Douglas would apologized. Douglas left the Hitler quote of his later editions of his book “Points of Rebellion” (1970). But warning there are still copies floating around with the fake Hitler quote.
Any quote would be a translation and thus inaccurate. Did Hitler say anything close to this? Is is a compilation of things that he said in various speeches or was it made from whole cloth?
Now that the OP’s question has been answered (I think), here’s my Hitler-poster tale: I recall back in the 1980s, a Bangkok department store was selling posters of Hitler. When a friend asked why, he was told: “Because he was a very funny man.” The best we could figure is they mistook him for Charlie Chaplin, who enjoyed something of a resurgence in popularity over here at that time, with some of his stuff being shown on video monitors in some buses.
I recall the poster from the 70s. Also, Yoko Ono read the quote on one of those concert films with her and John. (This was after she broke up the Beatles.)
I see that this post is very old but I thought I’d at least try - I found a poster with this quote which was used as the backing on a painting I’ve been restoring. It is a chalk drawing of hitler’s face with the quote imbedded into it. Black and white. It’s in rough shape but maybe that’s the poster you’re looking for.
