Our wedding anniversary is in October, as is my In-laws. We are kicking around the idea of taking off to Vegas for a long weekend.
What is the best way to get a deal? Any tips? Anything we shouldn’t miss over our short jaunt?

Vegas.com would be a good place to start. If you are traveling away from the holidays you should be able to find some deals. Find a place mid-Strip and you can walk to just about everywhere. There are several places to get half-price tickets to shows, but if you want to see something popular, buy early to get seats. If you can narrow down your interests for the trip, we can provide a lot more direction.
This messageboard has a forum that deals with nothing but deals and discounts on Las Vegas hotels. Isn’t the internet great?
Excuse me, I am pressed for time this morning. A Google for ‘Cheapo Las Veas’ will take you to an excellent site for this.
Try the Suncoast Hotel.
Cheapo Las Vegas is a good starting place, but they do come at it from a direction not quite appropriate for an anniversary, IMO. Still, they are fairly comprehensive in their reviews…
Search all the online sites, and you’ll find a deal somewhere.
Stay on Fremont Street, not on the strip.
I disagree. Downtown is fine if you are there for cheapo gambling and such, but an anniversary needs to be on the Strip. The Bellagio or Venetian if you can swing it.
Else, I’d say the Paris, Las Vegas.
Or Ceasar’s. Or Treasure Island. Stay away from the Wynn. If you are young and trendy, try Mandalay Bay.
I live in Las Vegas and there are a few tricks to getting the good deals.
First - be flexible. It is amazing how one week the rooms are $350 per night and the next week the same rooms are $89 per night - it depends on if there is a convention in town, or if it is a long weekend. Plus, if the rooms are pricey, it means a busy time and that means flights will be full so it will cost you more to fly here as well. So compare prices at the same locations over 2, 3 or 4 weeks and you will be surprised at the savings.
Second - if at all possible, come Sunday - Thursday…generally, midweek rates are FAR cheaper than weekends, and sometimes you can pay less for four nights midweek than you will pay for one night on a weekend. In addition, it is less crowded so you can get show tickets or get into good restaurants/buffets a lot easier, cheaper and faster.
Thirdly, look into some of the properties a little off-the-Strip…you might need to rent a car, but it could be worth that extra expense…some places to consider: Rio, Orleans, Palace Station (or any of the Station Casinos but some are quite a schlep from the Strip) or, as mentioned, the new Suncoast (which is quite a bit south on the Strip). I am not a big fan of Downtown…kind of seedy, other than the Gold Nugget that still is quite nice. Main Street Station downtown is also good, and if you want to meet every Hawaiian on the mainland, go to the California Hotel/Casino (across the street from Main Street Station).
There are deals to be had, but the main thing is to shop around, be flexible with dates and sometimes, if you are real nice to the telephone operator at the property, you can flat out ask them when the next “deal” is…most likely they can tell you the best dates/prices available. Oh, and if you are coming with a group of 6 or so, ask about a suite…sometimes they can be a good deal for a group of people who want to party together and don’t mind sharing a living room (they usually have three bedrooms).
But why worry about a deal? Certainly you will win big while you are here and money will be no object…
