My son brought home this ginormous bean bag chair. Its original owner was apparently a smoker and even after a month airing it out in the family room, it still reeks. I am not ruling out there might be unseen grime causing some of the smell, but it looks pretty good. How can I get this awful smell out? It’s kind of a fleecy type of fabric. It could probably be washed except that the stuffing is shredded foam rubber and would cause a huge mess if removed. I have tried Febreze and it did nothing. Someone - advice? Please?
Have you tried baking soda? Never fails for me.
Try sealing it in a big plastic bag with a few charcoal briquettes.
DianaG , I thought of baking soda, but I figured it would make a mess. The smelly things gets used by two large young men and one ungainly dog.
Twickster , I guess I forgot to say HOW big it was. It’s easily five feet across and probably a foot to a foot and a half thick. I don’t thing they make plastic bags that big. I suppose I could throw a few on there and put a couple of huge plastic bags over it temporarily.
Thanks!
You could get a sheet of visqueen and drape over it. Shouldn’t be hard to find a roll at a hardware store.
There ya go! Thanks everyone!
I inherited a very smoky smelling leather couch from a friend. I washed and rewashed the leather with cleaner but it never did as much for the smell as simply putting the thing out on my porch in the sunlight. I’d recommend a couple days in the bright sun, rolling it around to make sure all the sides get sun.
Did you check for an inner bag holding the foam? Bean-Baggy things are often double-bagged so to speak.
No inner bag, unfortunately. It actually sits right in front of a south-facing sliding glass door. Unfortunately, this godforsaken area of the country has set a record for snow fall and little sun. Once the weather gets nice I will put it out on the porch. I was hoping for something a little quicker, however.
Try atmosklear, works really well.
If you want to contain the smell while absorbing it, and you can’t put it outside, I’d suggest activated carbon, which you can get at a pet shop for about $5. They mean it for aquariums, but you can cut open the bags and spread it around, under a tarp. It’s great at removing chemicals and odors. That’s what it’s for.
I had a dream about a bean bag chair last night, so woke up thinking about this thread.
Did you manage to destinkify it?
How funny of you to think of this! It has gotten better. I had best intentions and went out and bought activated charcoal and a lightweight tarp to enclose it (it’s a huge bean bag), but I just haven’t done it yet. Maybe I’ll do it today as both bipeds are gone (i.e., not using said bean bag), and it’s sunny, so the pup can be persuaded to lay in patches o’sunlight.
Thanks for the nudge!
Now, that dream about a bean bag chair…
