Many years ago, while watching one of the Elvira: Mistress of the Dark type shows late one night, I saw a movie that, as far as I can recall, took place in some Mediterranean locale (possibly an island) and featured some sort of Satanic or Pagan cult. The soundtrack featured Age of Aquarius-era music. That’s all I can recall. Ring any bells for anyone?
I’ve been trying to restrain myself. I don’t have to “Reply” to every thread. But every one that catches my eye begs a response…
I have to say this------
WE WEREN’T HIPPIES! WE WERE “FREAKS!”
We called ourselves Freaks because we knew we were out of the norm.
The media pounced upon the image of a flower (placed in the muzzle of a gun aimed by a a National Guardsman, I know) and “sliced & diced it” to fit their own needs.
Flower Power? No, dude.
We were into ‘shrooms.
If you watched a movie that involved “hippies” trippin’ out over vampires, werewolves or whatever…you were swallowing Hollywood marketing propaganda:
we were too busy writing, editing & printing the news from our side. The truth was scarier than fiction.
Might it have been Islands of Death (AKA Devils in Mykonos)?
OK you’re a freak. We get it you’re a freak.
I was so hoping this was going to be about Phantom of the Paradise. Hippie freaks . . .
First one that popped into my head was Love Camp, AKA Divine Emanuelle, AKA tons of other titles. Filmed in and around Greek ruins, Laura Gemser plays the leader of a free-love cult that uses violence and is pretty obviously based on Jonestown.
Honestly, except for the location of the island, it sounds like Wicker Man.
I’m thinking maybe “Dagon?” It’s an adaptation (fairly loose) of Lovecraft’s “The Shadow over Innsmouth,” filmed in Spain. Features a really pretty girl with tentacles. I don’t recall the soundtrack, though, so that’s a problem.
Possibly; I’m going to have to track that one down and watch it to be sure…
That sounds like a possibility, too…another to check out.
Definitely not Wicker Man, which I own on DVD and really like (the original, of course!); I distinctly remember seeing white stone pillars of some sort framed against a coastal background.
Yeah, yeah, and they’re “Trekkers” and not “Trekkies.” Stay away from the brown acid!
I Drink Your Blood wasn’t in a Mediterranean locale, but otherwise fits what description there was. (It’s not like there have been a lot of hippie horror movies*.)
Venus in Furs has the seaside locale, but is a suspenser, and more for the Rat Pack set than hippies*.
The Acid Eaters was an attempt to make an underground movie for the Perry Como generation, starring Brylcremed and bouffanted faux-hippies*, and has some beach scenes.
And the book Groovy Movies mentions one called The Hooked Generation that might be a possibility.
If you find out, do let us know. As a former Haight-Ashbury hippie* myself, I want to see it!
*If they were called hippies, which they weren’t, of course, they were called freaks, 'cause we were, like, not into labels, mannnnn…
Was it about an eloquent, long-haired and bearded vampire who came on like a guru and seduced a group of hippies into his cult? With a real downer ending?
I’m bumping this because I’m curious as to the answer myself.
It almost could describe some random scenes of the 1970 version of THE DUNWICH HORROR.
Was that THE DEATHSTALKER?
Deathmaster – starring Robert Quarry as the charismatic blood-drinker, Khorda.
Thank you, I vaguely remember seeing it. And in my vagueness thought he was playing Count Yorga in it.
