Help me ID this movie I saw on a bus, with no sound

On a recent two-hour bus journey, the bus’s screens were showing what looked like a very recent costume drama that I had never seen or heard of before. There was an actor whom I would have sworn was Chris Elliot in a serious and more or less leading role, which I thought was notable – though checking his IMDB page it looks like it wasn’t him after all. The sets and costumes also looked like they were very well done.

But I can’t tell you what anyone said in the flick, as the sound was off and I wasn’t paying attention to the Chinese subtitles very closely.

Balding, bearded faux-Chris Elliot was some kind of attendant or friend to a 19th century nobleman or aristocrat, and he seemed to be standing around listening to said nobleman bitch about something or other in most of the scenes, with a mopey expression on his face. At the end, the nobleman appears to be facing arrest for something, and he holds Chris hostage with a pistol while a bunch of gendarmes trot up on horses outside the estate. Nobleman keeps pointing pistol at Chris while the gendarmes beat on the door outside the room, but then suddenly points it at his own head and shoots himself. Chris kneels down to look at him, and we see an extended, disjointed flashback of Chris seeing some woman off at a train station. Gendarmes enter the room, Chris looks up at them, The End.

Any ideas?

It sounds like a scene from The Illusionist. Could you have confused Chris Eliot with Paul Giamatti?

Rufus Sewell plays the guy who shot himself.

Yes, that’s it. Thanks!
