Help me ID this story about Satan defeating God

Back in the '80s, at an SF club meeting, a fellow fan told me about a fantasy story (don’t recall if it was a short story or novel) he’d read in which Satan mounts a second rebellion against God, and wins. At the end, God laughs his ass off: “Take it! There’s the Throne! TAKE IT! I’M FREE! HAHAHAHAHAH!” (Because, you know, ruling the Universe is such a headache . . .) Can anyone help me track this down?

It might not be what you’re looking for, but The Devil’s Day by James Blish is similar. Good read, too.

I’d guess it was To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust which came out in 1984. But, annoyingly, that’s long enough ago that I don’t remember the outcome!

I read it quite recently and the outcome is nothing like what I described in the OP.

So did I. Nope, not the same thing.

I was going to mention James Blish too, I know the two books in the series as Black Easter and The Day After Judgement. The Devils Day could be a combined or alternate (US) title I guess. But IIRC it doesn’t have quite the ending described.
