I was lent a book by my mother when I was a kid. Like, 12 or 13. All I can remember about it was that it was about a woman who returned to her hometown after a long time of being away, and found that her brother had made a lot of money. Eventually, though, she discovers that he made the money by injuring racehorses (presumably for the Mafia or something.) I remember it talks about how he used a steel pipe to break the horse’s legs. This is all I can remember of the book. And if I recall correctly, there’s a much larger plot and other stuff going on too - the horse-injuring thing is just a part of it.
Anyone know what book this was? I think it was fairly recent at the time (1997-98 or so.)
