I ordered this desk from Staples anbd it should arrive Tuesday. In the computer room I have one L shaped desk which will be replaced with the new desk and another “corner” desk that is semi-curved and I plan on replacing.
Currently sit with so that if you took an L and rotated it 90 degrees to the right I would be facing the long part of the L. I have a 21 inch screen in front of me.
On the left or shorter side of the L I have two routers an 8 port switch, 3 UPS’s and two external hard drives and 1 4 port KVM switch.
Underneath the short end I have three PC’s sitting on a hardwood floor.
On the other “corner” desk I keep two laser printers, which will go on a new table many DVD’s and other things that will be moved to a bookcase to be purchased
Please keep in mind that each UPS is plugged into it’s own AC outlet which a good foot and a half from each other. The AC outlets were added to the room by a professional electrician.
**What I want is to know is
A) How should I position things to give me the most available room? I would move the UPS’s to under the desk but the computers will be there unless the teeming masses think there is a better place for the PC’s. The printers are wired and wireless is not an option. One is a network based printer the other goes over USB to my 2003 Server. **
B) What can I buy at Ikea to sole the issue of needing a bookcase/table for the DVD’s I have and the printers?
C) Any NJ Dopers want to help be assemble the desk/table/bookcase and re-do my cables?
Is it possible to put the monitor on the shorter end of the desk? I like having desks set up with the monitor and junk on the smaller side, so I can use the larger portion of the desks for papers, textbooks, notes, whatever. Although depending on what you do, your needs may differ.
And if you don’t mind me asking, what do you do that requires that kind of set up?
I think I have enough room - here’s a picture (please ignore the clutter - my Og - it looks like the biggest mess in the world!)
I have the monitor, printer and a label printer on the shelf, which gives me the entire rest of the desk for work space. Under the short leg, I have a printer cabinet - you could certainly fit three PCs down there.
It’s a nice, sturdy desk, but the finish is delicate. The price and size was right for me, so it works just right. It was no big deal to put together either.
I have my PC under the desk - it’s behind my chair in the photo. The “under corner” area also has some accessibility and is deep and open. You could probably fit a good deal of equipment under there, facing “out” one way or the other, if you could get a wood box or a few layers of wood or something to raise them about 6.5" above the lower cross beams.
If I put the monitor on the shorted end then the PC’s would have to go under the longer end I don’t know if the UPS’s will each where they would have to be in that case. Also I’d have to face a window.
I need the two routers because the VOIP router doesn’t have Wireless. I have three printers one is a Printer/Scanner/Fax/Copier that doesn’t fax because of the VOIP and then the two laser printers. I don’t need to laser printers but it’s nice to not have to swap envelopes and paper when I send a letter.
I used to work in Technical Support before I started working for the state in an entirely unrelated area but don’t want to lose all my sills because my goal is to get back into an admin/support position when there are openings in the state. I am a MCSE but my certifications need to be upgraded which is why I have the server.
One PC was running Linux when I wanted to learn it. I’ve since stopped using it and am planning on doing a fresh-install and learning how to administer a linux system. I
Ohh no that is much much less clutter than I have. I’m embarrassed by the way my room looks now. How long have you had the desk for I was worried about possible sagging from some reviews I saw on Staples.com. It looks like your shelf is longer than than the one on Staple’s site but that could just by my impression. but if I could put a Laserjet 1006 on the shelf then I could put my other laserjet on the short side and I’d need need some media management for my DVD’s.
Great idea! I could have someone cut two planks of some kind and run from one support to the other then put plywood on top and I could put the routers, cable modem and external drives there.
Nope - it’s the same size. It does look shorter in the Staples pic, but it runs from one end of the long side to the other.
It has held up well for the year or so I’ve had it. There is a sag issue with the middle of the shelf, but I have the monitor directly over the left support post, and it’s totally fine. And, as a matter of fact, I have a HP Laserjet P1006 all the way on the opposite side of the shelf…
::shakes shelf::
Nope - super sturdy!
The area under the shelf is about 12" deep - maybe DVDs under there?
I hate to bend so putting media under the desk is not a good plan for me. But I’m glad to hear there should be no sagging with where I’m going to put the screen.
