Help Me Make The Intersection Safer

As I was walking home after work I came upon yet another fender-bender on my street corner, literally right outside my house. Second one in as many months (last time it was big RV vs. big SUV). Thankfully in both cases nobody was hurt.

I live on a gentle slope - the street going up the hill (call it Smith Street) has no stop signs within a few blocks of my house, so traffic goes whizzing up and down it pretty fast (last night I saw a guy going uphill hit the intersection so fast that he became airborne and when he landed sparks flew off his undercarriage). The cross street (call it Jones Street) has stop signs on both sides, so anyone on Jones is supposed to stop before crossing Smith.

Predictably, people manage to miss the stop signs and roll across Smith right into traffic, or somebody who did stop and then proceed gets clobbered by somebody going too fast and/or not paying attention on Smith, or somebody stops on Jones and then zips out without really checking both ways.

Per my neighbors there have been a number of accidents at this corner, including at least one fatality. I’d like to go to the city and see what they can do to make it safer.

Does anyone have any good ideas to put forward? Off the top of my head I’ve thought of:

  1. “Prepare To Stop” signs on Jones alerting traffic to get ready to halt.
  2. Some sort of blinking lights on Jones to make the stop signs more visible.
  3. “Botts Dots” (plastic bumps epoxied to the road surface, used extensively here in sunny Cal), a row or two of them 30-50 feet prior to the stop signs on Jones, alerting drivers that they’re coming to the stop sign.
  4. Better markings on the pavement (big white line and “STOP” in reflective paint). It’s already there but keep it up.
  5. Additional reflective tape on the stop signs to illuminate them better at night (although today’s crash was in broad daylight)
  6. Better street lights at the corner.
  7. Signs on Smith street nearing Jones telling people to Slow Down and Watch For Crossing Traffic.
  8. Speed bumps on Smith.
  9. Traffic signal at the intersection.
  10. Stop signs on Smith.

The state economy being what it is, inexpensive is better. I think that #10 would be the simplest and most effective.

Any thoughts? Myself, my neighbors and undoubtedly the local PD and paramedics thank you!
