Help me pick the most "definitive" songs by each of these bands...

I gotta disagree with some of these:

The Cure…someone picked “Lullaby”. Believe it or not, thats too atypically gloomy even for them! For quintessentiality, I’d pick “Catch”, or “Strange Attraction.”

Heart…I’d have to agree with “Crazy on You.” Barracuda, while not only worse than “Crazy”, is also atypically hard-rock, “Crazy” is a bit softer. (Note, “crazy”, while on my top 10 is far from my favorite Heart song. That would be “Sylvan Song/Dream of the Archer.”)

And, on a less happy note, I would have to agree with another poster w/r/t Godsmack. “Alive”, sadly, is their most typical song. However everything I’ve heard from them totally pales in comparison to the idiosyncratic “Voodoo”.

Story of my life. I’m a dollar short too…

I’ll try to keep up this time

KMFDM Dogma (sums up their politics perfectly) or Wrath or Stray Bullet

Marilyn Manson Dried Up, Tied and Dead to the World or Organ Grinder

Nine Inch Nails The Becoming

Pantera Fucking Hostile or By Demons Be Driven

Portishead Glory Box or It’s a Fire

Primus Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles, Volume II)

Rob Zombie Demonoid Phenomenon

Sarah McLachlan Sweet Surrender

Suicidal Tendencies Disco’s Out, Murder’s In

Oops, guess I should have checked out your list of owned albums beforehand

Wanted to add another:

A Perfect Circle 3 Libras or Sleeping Beauty

Ludovic - I haven’t made a formal decision on the Cure yet. I need to take a day off to listen through my whole collection and decide which particular song sounds the most gloomy, depressing, suicidal, etc…

And while “Crazy on You” does include their softer elements, I’m totally sick of it being overplayed on classic rock stations, whereas “Barracuda” still rocks my world…I’m willing to expand my horizons, though, so I’ll have to look at, umm, “acquiring” that song you mentioned by some means or another.

soulmurk - Your Pantera choice is GREAT (“Fucking Hostile”) but as for Primus, sorry, it’s gotta be “Tommy the Cat”. And how can you possibly suggest any Suicidal Tendencies song other than “Institutionalized”??

Good fucking GOD, I just looked at the scope of my “M” collection and just about had a stroke, there are bands in there that I haven’t listened to AT ALL since I bought their CDs…this is gonna take QUITE a while…

Sorry for the delay. The M’s took awhile:

Machine Head: a friend suggested “I Am Your God” but that’s on a CD I don’t have, so I’ll have to pick it up soon (everyone bugs me that I need that MH CD anyway lol)
Malevolent Creation: “Thou Shalt Kill!”
Yngwie Malmsteen - “I’ll See the Light Tonight”, or “Black Star”
Manowar - “Blood of the Kings”
Marillion - “Garden Party” (only have Fish era)
Marilyn Manson - “Irresponsible Hate Anthem”
Mastermind - “End of the World”, or “Only in My Dreams”
Masters of Reality - “The Blue Garden”
Paul McCartney - “Goodnight Tonight”
Meat Loaf - “Bat out of Hell” - was leaning towards “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” until I remembered it got sold to a FUCKING GM TRUCK COMMERCIAL…you sellout, Mr. Aday!! :frowning:
Meco - probably that 17-minute Star Wars medley
Megadeth: “Peace Sells” is an obvious choice, but I’m leaning towards “Hangar 18”
Meliah Rage: “Meliah Rage” (recommended by friend, I still have to check it out)
Memento Mori: “Lost Horizons”
Men at Work - “Down Under” (is there any other choice?? lol)
Mercyful Fate - “A Dangerous Meeting”, or something else from “classic” era…
Metal Church: still working this out…“Gods of Wrath” got the most votes on the metal board, with “Fake Healer” and “Ton of Bricks” close behind. Or I might say fuck it and pick something from Human Factor
Metallica: bah, this band’s like a hated relative that you just know is going to turn up at a family reunion, so let’s pick “Master of Puppets” and speak no more of it…
Mike + the Mechanix: “The Living Years”
Steve Miller Band: “Jet Airliner”
Mind Funk: “Big House Burning”, or “Goddess”
Ministry: right now it’s a dead heat between “N.W.O.” and “Thieves”
Missing Persons: “Noticeable Ones”
M.O.D. - “A.I.D.S.”
Molly Hatchet - “Fall of the Peacemakers”
Moody Blues - “Nights in White Satin”…well, because I only have 2 of their studio albums…yeah, my Moody Blues collection sucks ass.
Gary Moore: “End of the World”
Morbid Angel: “God of Emptiness”
Mordred: “Esse Quam Videri”
Alanis Morissette: “You Oughta Know”
Mortal Sin: “Into the Fire”
The Motels: “So L.A.”
Motley Crue: Tossup between “Live Wire” or “Looks That Kill” as I only have their first two albums.
Motorhead: “Killed by Death”…convince me I’m wrong.
Mr. Bungle: EVERYONE I meet is recommending something from “Kalifornia” but I don’t want to go broke making this collection, ya see…so I’ll probably pick “Slowly Growing Deaf” from their debut.

From various artists collections:
Men w/o Hats “The Safety Dance”
Eddie Money “Two Tickets to Paradise”

I think Master of Puppets works for Metallica, since it reflects most of what they do best in terms of changing dynamics and complexity. One works, too. Nothing more recent than that should even be discussed.

Just wanted to add – and, in the process, narcissistically bump this thread back to page one  – that I just listenened to “Gods of Wrath” by M.Church, and DAMN that’s awesome song. I had totally forgotten. As the KBBL d.j. says, “We have a wiener!”

Little Feat - Dixie Chicken
Robert Palmer - Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley

I would also offer Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters for Elton John. It’s in much the same style as TD but not quite as…well…syrupy or Levon (Take me to the Pilot is a personal favourite too)

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

One more vote for The End, I mean that’s just THE Doors.

Don Henley - Get Over It or You Must Not Be Drinking Enough

Big Brother and the Holding Company - (Take Another) Piece of my Heart

Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post, got to be this one, man, listen to it again (Live at Filmore East is great but long so the standard album version would be fine for your purposes).

Great thread, thanks, I could go on for quite a while with this.

Ramones: I Wanna Be Sedated
Stevie Ray Vaughan: Texas Flood

This part wasn’t so hard, but once again, the bands in ALL CAPS are ones I’d most like input on…

NAILBOMB - “Cockroaches” or “World of Shit” (listening to this one right now)
Napalm Death - “World Keeps Turning”
NAZARETH - Well, it’s either “Hair of the Dog” (the only CD I have) or “Expect No Mercy” (from mp3)…or “Love Hurts”, if need be.
NEUROSIS - only have “Soulz at Zero” but that’s all I need…I’ll probably come up with one on my own since I love this CD to death.
NEVERMORE - “Dreaming Neon Black” is the preliminary choice (any Nevermore fans here?)
New Order - “Blue Monday” (which would make the O’s interesting…see below…) or maybe something poppier, like “True Faith” or “Bizarre Love Triangle”
STEVIE NICKS - Well, when thinking of the most definitive Nicks songs, I come up with “Gypsy”, “Sarah”, or “Landslide”…which are all Fleetwood Mac songs, of course. :frowning: And since I have only “Bella Donna”, well…I listened to it and didn’t find anything that really fit that style. Should I just go with “Edge of Seventeen”??
NIGHT RANGER - I’m leaning towards “Sing Me Away” or “At Night She Sleeps”, but could use some input on them.
NILE - Bah, I’ll just listen to “Nephren-Ka” again and pick one at random
NINE INCH NAILS - “Closer” is nearly a lock, but would like to hear opinions for alternate choices.
NIRVANA - someone suggested “Heart-Shaped Box” earlier…I do NOT want to use “Smells Like Teen Butts” or whatever that flop single was called…
Nocturnus - “Destroying the Manger”
Aldo Nova - “Fantasy”
Nuclear Assault - “Brainwashed” (any Nuclear Assault fans here?)
N.W.A. - I know the obvious choice is “Fuck the Police” but I really gotta pick “Straight Outta Compton” for this one. I’d elaborate, but only if someone objects to my choice.

The Offspring - “Gotta Get Away”, maybe “Come Out And Play” instead.
Oingo Boingo - even though I only have “Dead Man’s Party” on CD, it’s gotta be “Little Girls” (from mp3)
OLD - “Who Are You” … yeah it’s a cover song, but blows away EVERYTHING on “Lo Flux Tube”, so there
MIKE OLDFIELD - All I have is the Killing Fields soundtrack, so either I pick “Evacuation” or skip it entirely…
ONSLAUGHT - Something from their 1st 2 albums, since “In Search of Sanity” is too similar to Grim Reaper which was covered in the G’s.
Opeth - “Blackwater Park” ('nuff said!)
ORGY - OK…the only plausable choice is “Blue Monday” since the rest of “Candyass” blows chunks…which brings it into conflict with New Order if I choose the same song for them. Should I pick both? Discuss.
Ozzy Osbourne - I think it’s obvious that the only logical choice is “Crazy Train”
OVERKILL - still haven’t got a clue…any Overkill fans are welcome to chime in.

Bugnorton – I may or may not include Allman Brothers “Whipping Post” since I’m trying to keep this limited to my personal collection, and while I’ve already added Devo “Whip It” and Lynyrd Skynyrd “Free Bird” from mp3 because, c’mon, I had to include them…I’m already pressing the limit on the A-C section which is at 675mb already, and has to fit on one CDR.

Is “Dirty Laundry” really the wrong choice for Don Henley? I’ve noticed the consensus leans towards something softer…

Soup – I’ll get to the Ramones soon enough, but at the moment, I’m leaning towards “Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?” or “Blitzkrieg Bop”

BTW here’s the link to the A-M stuff so far, if you want to pick over those:

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black, great choice.

From Opeth I’d say The Moor, that song has every different Opeth Style, the soft melodies, the power singing, great riffs, great solos, and some good lyrics. “Still Life” is definetely their best album.

Oh great, another fucking Opeth album to buy.

You see, the advice I got from the metal board suggested something from Orchid or My Arms, Your Hearse, so yesterday I had to make an “emergency CD store session” to pick up used copies of both. (And I still think “Blackwater Park” beats them all.) The also suggested the one Nevermore album I didn’t have, Politics of Ecstasy, and that one they WERE right about (“Seven Tongues” to replace “DNB”) – but the disc turned out all SKIPPY and I won’t have enough gas money to go back and replace it until next week!! Of course, that didn’t stop me from ahem “grandfathering in” the POE track into the collection, for the time being.

Oh, and I’ve also changed my Nirvana and Night Ranger entries to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (once I listened to it again, I realized yeah, that’s the one) and “Sister Christian”, respectively. That last one caused a LOT of consternation on the metal board…

I notice that The James Gang is not represented, so I’m guessing that you’re going to include Joe Walsh “solo”. I recommend Rocky Mountain Way as it is endemic of not only the artist but the genre.

Aerosmith has to be Walk this Way.

  John Cougar Mellencamp : Smalltown

Billy Joel : Piano Man, Of course

Bob Seger : On the Road Again/Turn the page, although anyone who owns a Chevy probably prefers Like a Rock

Nirvana : Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings.

Collective Soul - The World That I know

Tragically Hip - Little Bones

Pearl Jam - Alive

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way?

Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall Part 2. Probably because I grew up in the 80’s and I’ve seen the video for it quite a few times. But I’d be interested to know if something like Money, Brain Damage, or Wish You Were Here, got as much play time as Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 did.

Well, that alone convinces me to stick with Ford vehicles for the rest of my life.

I don’t have any Joe Walsh CD’s, but I’ll probably add “Rocky Mountain Way” because (like Devo & Lynyrd Skynyrd) he’s definitely an artist that should NOT be skipped over due to that small technicality.

Pink Floyd - this one I can already see will be a tough one in the next section, though I’m leaning closer and closer towards “Brain Damage/Eclipse” as the final choice. “ABITW #2” really isn’t Floyd’s “definitive” style, it’s too disco.

Pearl Jam - I’ve all but settled on “Even Flow” for them.

I’ll be reading the new Harry Potter book this week, so the next installment (P-Q) likely won’t be for several days, although I’ll continue to read responses & reply to them of course.

Sorry for the long delay. (And no, I haven’t finished Harry Potter 5 yet, so…NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!) But do mind your "P"s and "Q"s, because it’s time for…well, you know…

PALLAS: Atlantis
PANTERA: By Demons Be Driven (pretty much a lock, despite many suggestions on the metal board for “Cowboys from Hell” or something even softer.)
ALAN PARSONS PROJECT: Lucifer (or Hyper-Gamma Spaces…it’s GOT to be an instrumental, no matter what)
PEARL JAM: Even Flow (again, mostly a lock despite many other suggestions, like “Black” or “Alive” – sadly, “Jeremy” is out of the running, too far outside their “definitive” style)
PENTAGRAM: Dying World
A PERFECT CIRLCE: 3 Libras
PESTILENCE: something from “Testimony of the Ancients”, I think
PHENOMENA: Kiss of Fire
PINK FLOYD: Welcome to the Machine or Comfortably Numb – a complete tossup at this point.
PLANET P PROJECT: Why Me?
ROBERT PLANT: In the Mood (but open for suggestions)
THE POLICE: Message in a Bottle (pretty much a lock, mostly because the box set I ordered got LOST IN THE MAIL and anything I choose has to be downloaded, and with the RIAA witchhunt going on…well, you know)
POSSESSED: The Exorcist
POST MORTEM: Armies of the Dead
POWERMAD: Slaughterhouse
PREMATURE EJACULATION: Negative Findings
THE PRETENDERS: Mystery Achievement
PRETTY MAIDS: Future World
PRIMUS: Tommy the Cat
PRINCE: When Doves Cry (or something else…I only have 1999 and Purple Rain to choose from, right now)
PRONG: Unconditional (open)
PSYCHEDELIC FURS: Pretty in Pink
PSYCHOTIC WALTZ - I of the Storm
PUBLIC ENEMY: Fight the Power (by far the easiest choice so far!)

Q5: Missing in Action
QUARTERFLASH: Harden My Heart
QUEEN: Bohemian Rhapsody - the “Stairway to Heaven Rule” definitely applies here
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE: Song for the Deaf (or something else from that album, the only one I have right now)
QUEENSRYCHE: Anarchy X/Revolution Calling
QUICKSAND: Freezing Process
QUIET RIOT: Metal Health (Bang Your Head)
THE QUIET ROOM: Something from “Introspect”, the only CD I have…hmm, any Quiet Room fans here? No? Didn’t think so…
QUORTHON: No More And Never Again (mainly for the chorus, “I’ll Never Eat Pussy Again”. lol)

Looking ahead:
RUSH - definitely need suggestions. So far, the only consensus is that “Tom Sawyer” is too obvious.
SAGA - a five-way tie between Wind Him Up, Don’t Be Late, Careful Where You Step, The Perfectionist and Cat Walk. (At least the S’s are a loong way off…)

Robert Plant - Tall Cool One or Big Log
Saga - I vote for Wind Him Up
Rush - Spirit of Radio (do I have that title right?)
Stevie Nicks - Bella Donna (title track)

[shameless BUMP  ]

Robert Plant - “Big Log” gives me the creeps for some reason. (Probably that abandoned gas station in the video, which eerily resembles a real abandoned gas station in New Cuyama, CA that I broke down at once. In fact, the video may have been filmed there, for all I know!

Saga - looks like “Wind Him Up” is a winner (compiling Suse’s vote with those from the metal board.)

Anyone else wanna make suggestions? This thread sure got dead…

Well…Tall Cool One does have those echoes of Led Zeppelin in it.

My own Robert Plant favorite is Twentynine Palms.
