Help me pick the most "definitive" songs by each of these bands...

I’d like to add to the c’s with these two(which were mentioned by KGS, but these songs are better, its a fact)

the cro-mags seekers of the truth or hard times

coc hungry child(the newer mess just isn’ ass good as the early 8o’s) mad mad mad world…

I’ll hafta agree with Hawthorne on the Deep purple - Highway Star .
For Armored Saint I’d go with Book of Blood or The Legacy as a tribute to Dave Pritchard .
Dio - We Rock

Hey , Blonde , I was thinkin Kiss of Death for Dokken , but In My Dreams is a good call
Also :
Dream Theater - Killing Hand
The Gathering - On Most Surfaces
Led Zep - Immigrant Song

Hell , now ya got my brain workin …

Re: Steve Miller Band… I think “Living in the USA” is a better choice.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, not Welcome to the Machine (Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a better track than WttM)

Alan Parsons Project - Where’s the Walrus? It’s better than Lucifer, hands down…lot’s of zip, good drum track for an instrumental…

Rush - Early Distant Warning Very tight song, Geddy Lee at his best and a song about concern for anybody, anything and for any time…

Going back to The Offspring, the song All I Want is definitely the theme song for that band, although I may be slightly partial to One Fine Day…a definite soccer hooligan song!

Ok fellas, here comes the “R” selections:

Rage “In the Darkest Hour”
Rainbow “Stone Cold” - I stuck with the Joe Lyn Turner era since the Dio era has already been sorta covered by…well, Dio. But I’m not quite sure if that was wise or not, or even if “Stone Cold” is the right choice for JLT.
Rammstein “Du Hast”
Ramones, the “I Wanna Be Sedated” - not my first choice, but just about everybody pre-emtively selected it, so…here ya go.
Ratt “You Think You’re Tough”
Raven “Mind Over Metal”
Realm “Eminence”
Re-Animator “Room 101”
Red Rider “Lunatic Fringe”
Renaissance “Kiev” - difficult since I only own one CD by this band.
Reverend “Ritual”
Rigor Mortis “Six Feet Under/Worms of the Earth”
Rivers, Bob “I Am Santa Claus”
Rolling Stones - okay, I give up. Somebody else has to pick a track from this over-rated, evil band (preferably from “40 Licks”), I’d rather not think about them any more than I have to…
Romantics, the “What I Like About You”
Rondellus “Via Gravis (A Hard Road)” - yeah, it’s a cover, but a very unique one, so I gotta include it!
Roxy Music “More Than This” - see Renaissance, above.
Royal Hunt “Last Goodbye”
Running Wild - something from the 1st two albums. Any RW fans here?? The metal board was little help…
Rush “The Camera Eye” - pretty much a done deal at this point.

As for previous comments:

Govindha, while you’re back-checking my “C” selections, can you help me out on The Cure? That one’s given me the most trouble…oh, and your C.O.C. suggestions do sound good, I will consider them. But Cro-Mags is pretty solid at this point.

Snake - thanks for the Armored Saint suggestions, that’s another one I was stuck on. If I were to change Dream Theater, though (and I think I might) I’d pick “Under a Glass Moon” by a mile.

Yeticus Rex - I’ll have to check out that APP track. But Pink Floyd & Rush are basically a lock now…I’ve spent far too much brain power on them already. (Not that they weren’t worth it…both are very good, very diverse bands.)

And again, here’s the link to the full list as it stands so far:

As a Marillion fan, I really have to disagree with Garden Party as a choice. I’d go with either Incubus or Fugazi. Those are the two songs that hooked me. As far as Metallica goes, One may be an incredible song, but it’s not typical. Master of Puppets is more representative. For Offspring, go with Come Out and Play. I’d pick Black for Pearl Jam, and Welcome to the Machine of Pink Floyd. Anarchy X/Revolution Calling is a great choice of for Queensryche. I’d pick Red Barchetta for Rush.

And the mere mention of Blackwater Park has me reaching for the album. Damn, that’s a good piece of music.

Not that it’s a bad song, but it has no groove and is (intentionally) rather unpleasant to listen to. Doesn’t strike me as representative of Pink Floyd. Assuming you don’t want to do one of their big, instrumental epic-type things, I’d stick with something more well-known and blues-based.

For the Stones… hmm. I really like Gimme Shelter (I’m not a Stones fan), so I might recommend that one.

Marley - part of the reason I chose “Welcome to the Machine” over “Comfortably Numb” was in the context of how all these songs flow together, as part of a compilation. “Numb” just didn’t work as well as “Machine”, for some reason. In any case, Pink Floyd was a VERY hard band to nail down, definitive-wise.

KnightNavro - Yes, “Garden Party” isn’t that great a choice for Marillion, it’s too happy and upbeat for starters. But dammit, that’s one HELL of a beautiful song! I may change it later, but for now, I’m sticking with it…

And somebody PLEASE give me more votes for the Rolling Stones!!! “Gimme Shelter” (and “Sympathy for the Devil”, as suggested on the metal board) are close, but aren’t quite there yet. HELP!! HELP!!!

Nine Inch Nails: Something I Can Never Have. also And All That Could Have Been.

Tool: Third Eye

Filter: Hey Man Nice Shot

AC/DC: For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

The Crystal Method: Trip Like I Do

Pearl Jam: Yellow Ledbetter

ZZ Top: Legs

Alice in Chains: Down in a Hole

Sympathy for the Devil and Paint it Black are the only two Stones songs I’m find of. I suppose I’d go with SftD.

Though Hawkwind does a great version of Gimmie Shelter.

I still say picking Garden Party for Marillion is like picking Wicked Windows for Jethro Tull; they’re beautiful songs, but hardly typical of that band’s work. Is Assassing more to your liking? I can’t really explain it, but I feel like I was born knowing that song. I was humming along the first time I ever heard it.

Well, “Garden Party” was Marillion’s perennial concert closer, at least during the Fish era. So it’s not as obscure as, umm, whichever Tull song you mentioned. You make a good point, though…and yeah, “Assassing” does kick major booty. I think I might change it.

Oh, and I settled on “Brown Sugar” for the Stones. I think.

Anyway, here’s “Part I” of the S collection:

Sabbat “The Clerical Conspiracy”
Sacred Reich “Ignorance”
Sacrifice “Infernal Visions”
Sacrilege “Sight of the Wise”
Saga “Don’t Be Late (Chapter Two)”
Saint Vitus “White Magic, Black Magic”
Sanctuary “Future Tense”
Santana “Black Magic Woman”
Joe Satriani “One Big Rush”
Savatage “Hall of the Mountain King”
Saxon “Power and the Glory”
Boz Scaggs “Lido Shuffle”
Scatterbrain “Don’t Call Me Dude”
Neal Schon “No More Lies”
Scorpions “The Zoo”
Seduce “Crash Landing”
Bob Seger “Hollywood Nights”
Sentenced “Crumbling Down (Give Up Hope)”
Sepultura “Chaos A.D.”
Sex Pistols “God Save the Queen” (basically a tie between this and “Anarchy in the UK”. I flipped a coin.)
Shadow Gallery “Say Goodbye to the Morning” – currently embroiled in a debate over this band, on a metal board that worships them like gods, whereas I see them as shameless clones. It could get ugly.
Sheavy - ?? (got 2 cds in the mail last wk and had no time to listen to them yet.)
Shooting Star “Last Chance”
Simon & Garfunkel “The Boxer”
Simple Minds “Book of Brilliant Things” (might change it to “Once Upon a Time” or something else, but anyone who suggests “Alive & Kicking” or “Don’t You Forget About Me” will get a swift kick in the nuts!)
The Simpsons “Monorail Song”
Skid Row “18 And Life”
Skinny Puppy “Shore Lined Poison”
Skyclad - umm, this is where I got stuck…

“Shore Lined Poison” is a pretty good pick for Skinny Puppy. If you haven’t heard any of their stuff, and you like that one, it’s likely that you’ll enjoy the rest… Not the most accessable music out there, you know?

May I ask what the runners up were?

[sub]I would have gone with VX GAS ATTACK, or Testure, but that’s another thread, methinks.[/sub]

Well, the only Skinny Puppy CD I have is “Too Dark Park”, so…

Rolling Stones - “Miss You” - One of their most identifiable sounds…

Soundgarden - “Black Hole Sun” - Catchy tune and freaky video all in one…
