Help me plan a 3 day getaway with the wife!

How about Sedona? It’s just beautiful, and there’s plenty to do - you could visit Jerome, hit some great restaurants…

The Enchantment Resort according to my mom is unbelievable.

Here’s another link - just more info on Sedona. Here’s a website with resort info as well as stuff to do (there looks like there’s a lot!!) for Sedona. Balloon rides, horseback riding - you name it!

Just checked Southwest - out of FLL they have +/- $200 flights to Phoenix!

Laugh all you want, but I actually thought about going to the Poconos and getting a cheesy room with these champagne shaped baths. Believe it or not, my wife would probably love it.

Athena, aside from it being ‘dead’ in the winter, are there any other negatives to going in January? I actually thought it was a pretty good idea and seriously am/was considering it.

Agreed. Unless, of course, you check out the west coast of Florida. Have you been to Sanibel?

I’m not laughing! I always enjoyed the ads from the Poconos and they are so over-the-top that you could give yourself over to the experience.

I guess it depends on what you’re going there for. If you want to hole up in a nice hotel room and get romantic I’m sure it would work. You will be able to visit Rocky Mountain National Park (it’s right next to Estes Park), at least the lower areas (the high mountain roads will be closed for the winter).

There won’t be much to do in Estes Park itself, unless you’re partial to fudge and knickknack shops. There’s some OK but not great restaurants, and the scenery is pretty.

I guess for me the main issue is that if you’re going to that part of the world, I think there’s better places to spend time than touristy Estes Park. You won’t have a horrible time there, but IMO 3 days in Boulder would give you more of a “cool Colorado city” experience and you could spend a day driving and see the same or better scenery than you’d see in Estes. Heck, you could spend a day in Estes if you wanted, it’s only about a 45 minute drive from Boulder.

If you want to be in the mountains, there’s more romantic/nicer/prettier places than Estes, especially in the winter. Have you thought about Telluride? A little more of a hassle to get to, but heads and shoulders better than Estes.

How about staying where you are (or within a short drive) booking a really nice hotel or nice bed and breakfast, going out to a nice dinner.

A year or so ago Brainiac4 and I did an anniversary weekend in town. We took Friday off work, spent Friday in a spa (just a salon spa) getting completely pampered, checked into a really nice hotel, ate at one of our favorite restaurants that we wouldn’t take kids to. It was really wonderful. We only did one night, but three nights would be great - you could spend a day reading, see a rated R movie, go out in the evening to a show, go dancing, have dinner one evening with those Friends Without Children you never see anymore.

For me - I work full time, have two kids and go to school half time - a getaway weekend that involves air travel is too stressful.

One place you might consider is in the Smoky Mountains, maybe Gatlinburg or over in Asheville. You can probably find some Poconos-style kitsch, a bit of gambling in Cherokee, some snow, but not too brutal, weather-wise. The bonus is that it’s a short, cheap flight and you can get some serious luxury for your price range.

I really want to thank EVERYONE for all of their help in this. I ended up buying tickets to Colorado, flying into Denver. It is a place my wife and I have never been to, which makes it that much more special. All of the pictures I looked at make it that much more worth it.

I took everyones suggestions seriously and really appreciate everything. I did not pick Florida because I am already here, and picked none of the suggestions with beaches, because I see them weekly. Georgia is absolutely beautiful, but I was stationed in Georgia and have been to Savannah many times, so I thought it might not be as special for my wife because I might have ‘memories’ there.
BUT, I have not limited myself to any one place in Colorado, just within driving from Denver International Airport. So I am still open to suggestions within Colorado if anyone is willing. I am still seriously considering Estes Park, as well as Boulder.

By the way, herownself, thank you for your secret. It is still there and I am sure it is something that I will do in the future.

Dang, I got to this thread too late to give you any of my ideas. Oh, well. Have fun on your trip to Denver. Sounds like the two of you could use a break from your hectic schedules.

If it’s only three days, I would stay around Florida. Sarasota is lovely, as well as some of the upper Keys. You don’t want to spend half your trip traveling.

I would still love to hear your ideas, perhaps for my next trip.

ivylass, I agree that it will suck to have to travel, but it should not be that bad. We will spend approximately five hours in the air/at airports. I will actually arrive in Denver around 12pm, which will give me all of Thursday evening, all day Friday, all day Saturday, and Saturday night before leaving on Sunday morning to go back. It is just a getaway, and part of the excitement is knowing that we only will have THREE days together, so we will and should be busy.
