Husband has gone off deep end, help me take advantage!

Mr Duhnym is your typical workaholic who won’t take a vacation unless it’s December (slow time).

Today he said, “I think we should take a vacation, before Sabrina (our part-time nanny) starts school again.”

So Dopers…your challenge, should you wish to accept it, it to choose my vacation! Winner gets a t-shirt and postcard from the chosen location!

Some constraints:

The Toddler Nym. 18 months old, she’s going with us, so please don’t suggest Hedonism. Also, no passport which limits us to the Caribbean, US, Canada, and Mexico.

The Nym Nanny. 21 years old, also going with us. Sufficient stuff for her to do during the day while she isn’t watching the kid.

Mr. Nym. Wants to see stuff of significance? Huh? Wants luxury.

Me: I don’t care…I’m going on vacation in July!!!

General: We live in San Jose and have a toddler, please don’t suggest places where we have to take 4 planes over 18 hours to get to, it’s bad enough traveling with her. I like to SCUBA dive.

Dopers do your worst!!!

Don’t go to Mexico in July. Hot, hot, hot. We went to Acapulco in August on our honeymoon. I won’t say we didn’t have a lovely time, but we lived like vampires.

I’d like to suggest anything along the Redneck Riveria. Specifically Destin. Lots to do. Caters to tourist. Fun in the sun. Beautiful White Sand beaches. Cold beer sold right there on the beach. Lots of girls in thongs (Mr. Sue would like that I bet.)

I’ll even drive down and we can buy each other screaming orgams.

Vancouver. Straight up the coast so I’d think the plane ride wouldn’t be too bad, usually beautiful weather, national parks and historical stuff, plus a large city so anything else you can think of, it’s probably there, including an International Airport…

The above based on reports of those I know who have actually been there, which I have not. Anyone care to back me up?

I’m assuming most replies could be summarized as “Come to where I live!” so I’ll start.

Seattle is close and has a wide variety of entertainments:

Mountains, oceans, lakes, rivers, rain forests, etc. You can climb Mt. St. Helens (permit required, but available if it’s not a weekend), visit Mt. Rainier, SCUBA dive in Puget Sound (cold, but LOTS of underwater wildlife, esp. octopi). If you want to go farther afield you can visit “that King Columbia River and that great Grand Coulee Dam”. Take a ferry to the San Juans. Have lunch atop the Space Needle. Catch a baseball game in the world’s most expensive ballpark. Watch 'em toss fish at the Pike Place Market. Express gratitude to pluto by taking him and his wife out to dinner at the Metropolitan Grill. Tootle up to Victoria, B.C. and have high tea at the Empress Hotel. Go hiking in the Cascades. See Snoqualmie Falls. Go over Snoqualamie Falls in a barrel. (That would be a first!) Stay at the Salish Lodge overlooking Snoqualmie Falls and have their world-famous oatmeal for breakfast. (Oatmeal?) Stay at one of many quaint bed-and-breakfasts. Take pluto and wife to the Gorge for a concert.

Let me know if you need any suggestions.

There is no finer vacation than enjoying Polka Days in Pulaski, Wisconsin. Why I even got Frankie Yankovich’s autograph on a $1 bill. (It was the only paper I had)

Oh, wait, hubby wanted to see stuff with signifigance…

I would suggest going to Italy. I’ve never been there (not that I haven’t wanted to many times) but I’ve heard it’s beautiful. I’m certain there are many things your husband could find that would please him, and plenty for the nanny to do in her spare time. If you go to the south of the country you can scuba dive. Although travel time is extended on this trip, I’m sure you won’t have to board too many connecting flights. In fact, you may get a direct flight there if you look hard enough. The people there, I’ve heard, are extremely friendly and good times are to be had by all. (My grandmother tells me that. She goes there almost annually.) Also, when you get a chance to give baby to nanny, Italy is a very romantic place you and your husband are sure to enjoy. Shirt size: Adult Medium/Large (whichever you grab first) I can email you my address. I have extreme confidance. Hope where ever you go, you have a great time!

What is the Redneck Riveria?

And you’re right about the thongs…hubby loves those!

Sue,

Lucky you! Same story with my wife - never any time off, so we get two, three, maybe four day trips. Anyway, some good spots:

Disagree with previous poster on Mexico, at least Cabo San Lucas - beautiful in the summer, even if hot. Rooms are air-conditioned, and by the pool or the ocean (in the shade) is great. Lots-o-stuff to do, and toodler will love the water.

Also, since you in in S.J. you know all about Lake Tahoe, but I have found so many new things there in the last few years, and my whole family loves it (three generations). There is everything from fishing, boating, gambling, and a few incredible restaurants. Also hiking, biking, and water skiing.

Enjoy where ever you go,

Sili

Three words:

Canadian Exchange Rate.

Actually, I don’t live in Vancouver, unfortunately. But my town is kinda tiny, and uncomfortably sweltering in summer, so I won’t suggest it

Hawaii is but a hop, skip, and a jump from San Jose. It’s beautiful, SCUBA diving is good, there’s luxurious hotels, and there’s things of significance (Pearl Harbor). I’d suggest the Hyatt in Poipu, Kaua’i. There’s a 5 acre pool, and gorgeous grounds. Check it out:

The Redneck Riveria is the Gulf Coast from Mobile, AL east.

Let me put in my plug for Canada. Specifically BC and Alberta. Banff National Park http://www.worldweb.com/ParksCanada-Banff/

Jasper National Park http://www.worldweb.com/ParksCanada-Jasper/

And Lake Louise http://www.banfflakelouise.com/

And if you were going to do this, I would heartily recommend that you consider taking the train from Calgary or Banff to Vancouver. Stunningly beautiful.

No matter where you go, enjoy!

Agree with the Banff, Lake Louise suggestion.

The Chateau at Lake Louise is luxurious.

I was there in July, 97. If my experience is typical, you’ll be in the minority as English speakers. 85% of the other tourists were Japanese, and another 14% were German. At least you can see the sights over the heads of most Japanese tourists. It’s sort of like going abroad, but the hotel staff speaks English!

KimKatt

Where are you? Judging from your quote and your profile, I’ll guess Osoyoos, BC.

Anyways, come to Vancouver. It’s a beautiful city and your dollar will go a loooooong way. Lots of stuff to do, outdoors and indoors. In the city there is lots of good shopping, high-quality restaurants and a great night life. Out of the city, there is tons of hiking, camping and fishing. SCUBA in Vancouver can be good, but be prepared for cold water (it’s not so bad in July, but it’s still probably colder than you’re used to).

Wherever you go, have fun!

Thanks rubes, but if I wanted to see hell, I would just go visit my in-laws.

Thanks, but as I said, the kid doesn’t have a passport and I don’t believe we could get one fast enough as I seem to have lost her birth certificate.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Sorry, I don’t think I could convince Mr. Nym to go to Alabama even with NUDE beaches.

Nothing against you or your city Pluto, but that sounds like too much physical activity. Hiking…oh god, that hurts…with a toddler no less. LMAO

Good one Pluto.
