Help me recall a young adult book title

I remeber reading a book when I was in 6th grade I really enjoyed, but for the life of me I cannot remember it’s title or the name of the author. The book was about a young girl who was contacted by people she didn’t know who told her she was adopted. Turned out she was a princess of a magical kingdom. There was some sort of golden wind-up something involved, and I think the girl through the course of the story learned she could fly. (There may or may not have been a mouse involved in it, the details are a bit fuzzy, sorry. Or I may just have it mixed in with some other book I read near the same time.)
To my 11 year-old mind, it was well written and inspired many daydreams. If any of this rings a bell, please help, as I am looking for some books to read to my kids that I might enjoy as well.

This sounds an awful lot like The Seventh Princess, by Nick Sullivan. I first read it in early middle school, and adored it. It’s about a girl who falls asleep on the school bus, and awakes to find herself a Princess in a strange land. Magical adventures ensue. It turns out that other girls have been “adopted” just like her, and then get turned into harpies by an evil witch. Ahhh, it was good reading. I still have it on the shelves of my parents’ home.

Tequila-
I remember something vaguely like that. Did she have a weird crown shaped birthmark or something and something about the way she knew she was magical was that she could kiss her elbow? And I remember the wind up toy being a golden cat.

Unfortunately - no idea the title or who wrote it. (I remember that it was toward the beginning of the alphabet in the library) It was a good book.

amarith-Yes, she could kiss her elbow! Now if only we could remember the book…

No Flying in the House by Betty Brock?

I do love children’s books. Oh yes, a link to Amazon.com’s description.
