Because there’s a slight but real risk that I may actually get something useful done one of these days.
I’ve been trying to find some free, one-person role-playing game. Something browser-based. Your classic hack-up-monsters-and-find-treasure type game. No MMORPGs, no downloads, no having to pay for extra features with those stupid gaming tokens. Something simple. (Or, if it’s too hard to find all that, at least something free and browser-based).
I probably shouldn’t be asking this because I spend too much time at my computer as it is, but what the heck. I can always check into the Internetoholics Anonymous clinic… later.
P.S. I love customising characters. The type where you pick their eyes and hair and stuff. I used to spend hours on Yahoo Avatars, and that’s not even a game.
Have you considered Improbable Island? It’s not much on customizing. You get to choose your character’s race (after you reach a certain goal) and implant. You CAN spend real money on some things, but nothing that’s really necessary. For instance, you can buy a custom title with real money, but the title doesn’t DO anything.
It’s extremely Improbable, and set some time in the future. Once you reach certain goals in the game, you can buy things like a Cat Launcher (contains something like 200 rounds of angry cats) or a Mr. Bonky Nose clown helmet. However, at the start of the game, you’ll have enough money to buy a pair of Frilly Pink Panties as armor, and a Plastic Spork for a weapon.
Did I mention the dirty midget whores? There’s a race called Midgets, and their home town has a brothel in it. And, by the way…they’re no better than they should be.
It really can’t be described, only played. It’s free, it’s browser based, it’s crazy fun.
I agree with this. I used to play and you can pretty much devote as many hours as you like to the damn game without running out of things to do.
If you do end up playing, I can set you up with some pretty decent swag, too. I haven’t played for a while but I’ve still got some loot piled up not doing anybody any good.
Whoa, you’re still playing that? Are the monsters I created still in the game? (The Beholder of the Behinder, the Whining Old School Gamer, the Scotsman Clad in Kilt, the Union Member with Seniority, and the Rind Flayer?)
Yes, I am, and yes, they are. I think of you each time I run across one of the monsters. What’s more, it’s in the second season (as you may or may not know) and I’m a guild founder this time around.
Excellent, I really wanted to post something like this. I feared that I would have to give in to playing WOW to get a gaming fix. I haven’t found anything free that is entertaining for any significant amount of time.
You’re probably going to have a problem with that, unless you look into abandonware. When I was limited to a comp that wouldn’t run WoW, I spent months looking for something browser-based, free and graphics-based. And the only things I ever found were:
limited-time demos
basic plus pay
MMORPGS
time- or turn-limited games (you can make so many actions per 24-hour period, or actions you made took increasingly large amounts of time to actually happen)
Actually, let me add that Guild Wars, LOTRO, and DDO are all non-subscription now. You do have to buy the game itself, though, and at least for LOTRO and DDO, there are pay-to-play items, classes and races. Don’t know what Guild Wars’ model is now, since it’s been at least 3 years since I played it.
You might give Immortal Cities: Nile Online a try. It’s a city builder in which you have to negotiate trades with other players. The best part is, there is an end to the game; you eventually build yourself a pyramid and go immortal.
Not browser-based, but you can play the original Fallout*, Aveyond* and The Chosen: Well of Souls*** on GameTap for free.
*Only, like, the third greatest game EVAR!
**Kind of looks like a SNES Zelda clone, but it’s for Windows and came out in '07.
***Don’t know anything about this one.
If you’re up for a classic, there’s a free web-based version of Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatarwhich is (almost) completely accurate to the 1985 original.
I tried it, you still need to slow down your cpu Mhz to catch a moongate.
X-Com and MechCommander have online communities with free downloads of the originals. I tried the Free Civ, but it’s based on Civ Net, which I also had, which is horrible.
If they ever get back up, Home of the Underdogs has downloads of old games, but they always have financial trouble and shut down periodically.
If you don’t mind Flash-based, there’s Mardek (in three chapters). A very lengthy JRPG-style game. A lot longer than most games in Flash. At times (especially in the opening) the self-parody gets a little heavy, but it’s still a high-quality, full-featured game.
I haven’t linked to any specific site because you’ll probably want to choose one you like that has it. The save files are site-specific. So once you start at one site, you’ll have to play the game there every time.
