Help me win this ID-the-song contest!

Ran across this contest where you download a medley of 40 cover songs and you have to I.D. the song title, artist, and original artist. Since I know how much Dopers love to play “I.D. the song”, I’m pleading to the Teeming Millions for help!

I was able to identify “White Room” by Demons & Wizards (orig: Cream), “Come on Eileen” by Skyclad (orig: Dexy’s Midnight Runners), and “Diamonds and Rust” by Judas Priest (orig: ??? didn’t know it was a cover!) With the others I could tell what a few of the original songs were but most of them I have NO clue, so…everyone who wants to help, jump on in!!

Oh yeah, the contest is at http://www.furia.com/audiotests/audiotest0001.html I have no idea what the prize is.

One of them(the one that goes, "I will kiss you in four places) is Throw your Arms around Me originally by Hunters and Collectors. The only two people that I know who cover it often are Crowded House and Eddie Vedder. It’s definitely not Crowded House, but I don’t know Eddie Vedder well enough to tell if it’s definitely him.

Well, I can help with a few of the originals:

“I will be your preacher teacher”
Father Figure, by George Michael

“I’ve been lost without a trace”
Every Breath You Take, the Police

“What’s your price for flight?”
Sister Christian, Night Ranger

“She’s just the girl”
Girl You Want, Devo

“You shut your mouth”
How Soon Is Now?, Morrissey/The Smiths

(dunno the words but it starts at 3:01)
The Look, Roxette

Hope that helps a bit.

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez.

The opener is “Downtown Train” originally by Tom Waits. I think this version is by Patty Smyth.

“Throw Your Arms Around Me” is covered by Luka Bloom.

A good way to check who has covered a song is to search at CDNOW.com. Maybe you’ll even get a sample and be able to verify a match.

Here are a few that I recognized that haven’t been answered yet:

0:30- the good advice of friends unheeded- “Fascination”, orig. by Human League

1:14- Mary Tyler Moore theme song. originaly by ?

1:45 sounds like Big Country. And a check with CDNOW shows they have an entire album of covers, which is only available as an import in the US. I don’t recognize the song, though.

and the final song is “Our lips are sealed”, original by the GO-GO’s.

If you have Napster you could always enter just the song, see who pops up for singing covers and download a bit to verify it.

I looked at that Big Country covers album on CDNow, and I know most of the songs on it but it doesn’t sound like any of them (no soundclips available, dammit!)

I did check Napster for that “Sister Christian” song but no such luck, although a lot of people seem to think the original was by Steve Perry. (That one’s really bugging me because I know I’ve heard that version before!!)

The song at 2:02 sounds a lot like Rush, but that can’t be right because they’ve never done a cover song in their entire career!

Thanks everyone who’s posted so far…the contest ends Wednesday night so keep posting ideas as you get 'em!

I know four more of the original artists, although I can’t ID any of the persons doing the remakes:

:15 “There’s all the news to tell him…” is Back Home Again, originally by John Denver
:39 “I was dreaming when I drove the long straight road ahead” is I Drove All Night, originally by Cyndi Lauper.
:49 “They set you on the treadmill and they made you change your name” is Candle in the Wind, originally by Elton John. (These are the original Marilyn Monroe lyrics)
:59 “Here I lie in a lost and lonely part of town” is Tragedy, originally by the Bee Gees.
