Help! My computer hates my keyboard

This morning, my computer at home decided to have a hissy-fit when I powered it on. It would start to turn on, then burp and stop. After about a dozen rounds of its electronic burping, I turned it off and started from scratch. The second time, it turned on properly, but now the keyboard now seems to have no effect whatsoever on the behavior of the computer (the mouse, OTOH, works just fine). I checked the port where the keyboard is plugged in, and it looks and feels fine. I’m stumped.

The computer is now 5-6 years old, and I was thinking about replacing it anyway, but a) I’d rather do it at my own pace; and b) there are a few things I’d like to back up and copy over to a new machine that I don’t have stored on floppies (yes, floppies; part of the reason I’d been thinking about a new computer is that the old one doesn’t have a CD burner. But most new ones don’t have floppy drives, so what’s the best way to transfer the stuff from my old machine to a new one?)

Any troubleshooting assistance will be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I may not be able to let you know how things are working out if they aren’t working out well.

First, switch it off, unplug the keyboard, and plug it in again. There’s sometimes a little dust or corrosion in the connector that replugging it will dislodge. If it’s still no good, you’ll need to borrow or buy a replacement.

To move stuff to a new machine, it’s usually easiest to temporarily move the old hard drive over and copy everything. That’s been discussed here fairly recently.
