Help - my computer screen's gone wacky

The top half of the screen keeps jumping slightly, and there is a band of shivering lines up near the address bar. Every now and then the screen flickers. What do I do to stop it?

Hit it with a hammer ?

More seriously, check all the connections between the monitor and the computer. Try rebooting the computer. Try disconnecting the power from everything and leaving it five minutes. Apologies if you’ve tried all of that.

Also, does your screen have a degauss function ? It’ll be a button on the screen or somewhere in the on screen menu (if you have one). It’ll say degauss or have a U (probably upside down) with a line through it. Try that. In fact try that before the above ones.

If it were me I’d probably gently whack the side of the monitor to see what happens, but then you’re not me and that’s got as much chance of making it worse as it does of fixing it.

Failing everything just leaving it unplugged and unused for a while may help. How old is it ?

Thanks SpaceDog. I just shut down and started up again, and the wackiness seems to gave gone. I’ll keep your suggestions at hand just in case it starts again.
The monitor’s only two years old, so it shouldn’t be old age.

If its a G-5 iMac, its the mid-plane. Hardware problem that gets worse, then dies.
Probably should be a recall, but isn’t.

I had a monitor that suffered from similar problems, which is hardly surprising when you consider that the brand name was (god help me) ShamTek. I degaussed it for a while every time it played up, which stopped it being weird for a short amount of time. Eventually the problem mysteriously disappeared, and I’ve had no problems with it since, except obviously having my friends laugh at me for owning a ShamTek monitor.

Obviously this is about as anecdotal and unreproducible as information can get - the moral of the story is that even if it goes suss again, it might magically fix itself later, so don’t give up.
