Help, my jaw has fallen and it can't get up

Maybe, despite making little money, she believes that everyone is entitled to keep what they earn, and she doesn’t wish to be the beneficiary of money that she didn’t earn.

Maybe she thinks that people who support Obama are perfectly willing to see money taken from those who work for it and given to those who “need it more” and she doesn’t think that’s a wise policy, even though she would personally benefit from it.

Maybe. I think it’s more likely that like most Texans, she was brought up to believe that any tax is bad even if it’s necessary for things like roads and police, that any social program makes us socialist even if it improves our nation as a whole and even if we already are more socialist than we’re willing to admit, that “liberal” is a dirty word no matter how corrupt our conservative politicians may be, and that eventually everyone will recognize that Texas and God are the only true salvation for the United States, amen.

But I thought we wanted the world to end; aren’t we all looking forward the second coming?

“For I am in a strait between two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which is best of all; nevertheless to abide in the flesh is most needful for you.” Phil. 1:23, 24.
My conversation with a co-worker?

Her: ‘Did you vote?’
Me: ‘That’s a very personal question.’

Done.

So you admit that it is about stereotypes.

What a conundrum it must be for black Texans, though. Despite being Texans, like most Negroes of course they feel solidarity in voting for a fellow Negro. What to do?

Or for Jewish Texans. Despite being Texans, like most Jews of course they’re inclined to vote for the candidate perceived to be the best friend to Israel. What to do?

Or for gay Texans . . . wait, you covered that.

Wow, you’re really quite angry, aren’t you? I’m sorry that my representation of the people of my state offends you, but your offended sensibilities doesn’t make it less true. We are proud of our religion and our Libertarian/conservative posture toward politics. I’m liberal but I’m definitely in the minority. We also love football and marching bands to the point that we’re a little silly about them. You tell me. Does calling something a stereotype and dismissing it out of hand make it less true? Or do you simply insist that there are no regional similarities to any group of people and stereotypes evolve purely from prejudice?

Not angry, just mildly amused that you still don’t grasp the point.

Yes, many Texans love football and marching bands. I’m a Texan: do you assume that I, as an individual, must love football and marching bands?

Many blacks support Obama. Do you assume that an individual black person you just met must support Obama?

Many American Jews are pro-Israel. Do you assume that an individual Jew you just met must be pro-Israel?

Many gays are Democrat. Do you assume that an individual gay coworker must be a Democrat, and are astonished when she isn’t–to the extent that you fall back on yet another stereotype (oh, she’s a Texan) to explain her views?

Looks to me that life is trying to hand you a little lesson here, and you keep handing it back.

All I have read is the OP, and I have an urge to wrap Syntropy in a big Doper hug and whisper in his/her ear, “Honey/Bud, the most frightening thing isn’t that they can vote, but that they can own guns.”

Never mind. I’m an idiot. Again.

Penguin?

My supervisor confided in me today that Obama is the AntiChrist. I have to wonder if anybody would say that if he was white.

Well, in fairness, at least they’re finally coming around to the idea that the people in the Bible weren’t all blond and blue-eyed…

Probably. I seem to remember a few people claiming Bill Clinton was the AntiChrist. I think a case may even have been made for Ronald Wilson Reagan being the AntiChrist (each of his names has six letters  ). although that may have been a joke – it was a few years ago.

I’ve come to the conclusion there’s no end to the silly things people will believe and they’ll cling to those beliefs in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Then again, if you ask some of the atheists around here, that applies to me, too.

Excellent! The very best way to get me to see your point is by being a bit more condescending and self righteous. If I don’t reply it isn’t because I’m ignoring you, promise.

Personally I think we’re talking past each other. You’re bound and determined that I’m stereotyping no matter what, I’m bound and determined that you’re not listening to the fact that I’m blown away that anyone would vote against several key issues that affect them. At this point we could surprise each other, but I’m not betting on it.

Did you hear about the guy who brought his gun to the office last year and accidentally shot himself? The gun was in his jacket, he leaned back and it discharged, going through his thigh. I do wonder how hard core the office has to get to bring the .44 to work with you.

The case is actually a lot more comprehensive than that. A few gems:
-He used to live in a house with the address number 666
-His bullet wound scar resembles the scar of the antichrist
-If you convert his names to numbers, add them up, then add them up again, you get 666
-The UN something something something.

Personally, my favorite group of end times lunatics are the guys trying to get Barney (yes, the purple dinosaur) canceled because he’s the antichrist.

Syntropy - you might want to read this thread (we just had this fight!)

I love the title! Interesting thread. thanks. (Obama’s up! W00t!)

Hell, gays are even allowed to vote against the Gay Agenda.

What is this Gay Agenda I keep hearing about, anyway? I asked Sampiro about it once, and he just mumbled something about soft furnishings.

Seriously, help me out here. What is it? Banning paisley?

According to some people, it seems to include voting democrat.
