I was just emptying the dishwasher, and realized that we’ve aquired no less than a dozen POM tea jars that we reuse as glasses. They are simply perfect, and are now crowding out the rest of our glassware in the cupboard. We currently own enough for me to notice that they’ve switched to a clear glass logo from the painted logo.
I will only order a mojito every once in a blue moon, but these glasses make me want to pick up a regular habit mixing at home.
It reminds me of when I was a kid. There was a particular brand (that I can’t remember) of chipped beef that my Dad liked for lunchmeat. It came in a glass jar with raised stars around the lip. The were the perfect sized glass for milk with dinner.
I’ve never heard of POM (I don’t get out much) but good design is where you find it. I like the proportions of that glass.
Way, way back in the day, we used to get out glassware from the gas station–you could get a cup with each tank of gas. These were the glasses my mother let the 5 of use (and of course we broke them frequently).
eleanorigby, I remember the ‘Grog’ mugs and bowls that the parents would sometimes get at the gas station!
I’ve still got a mug somewhere, I think.
I simply LOVED Grog!
I still use those damned dried beef jars that you spoke of.
We use them for the morning orange juice.
I really am appreciating those tea jars, ComeToTheDarkSideWeHaveCookies.
They’d be perfect for my unsweetened, very strong iced tea that I drink all the time.
I suppose there are worse things that you could be unintentionally collecting!
Now I’ll have to look for that particular brand of tea, in that particular jar!
nonacetone - When we were kids we got the Grog (BC by Johnny Hart) tumblers and mugs at Marathon gas stations. It’s still a request in our family if we want a milk refill to fill it “to the feet” (about a 1/4 glass of milk).
There were two sizes of the chipped beef jars, if memory serves. I’m pretty sure my mom still has at least one of each in her collection of glassware that she still uses. One is definitely a “juice glass” size, but there was a larger one as well, which is what I always used for milk…and my Dad’s home-made chocolate malts. mmmmMMMmmmmm
I have nad no luck trying to remember what the brand name was, but this is the closest I’ve found to it in a current product.
With us, it was the jars from “New Year’s Eve cheese”. You know, the Kraft stuff in flavors like bacon (yummm) and pineapple. Kind of liked the pimiento flavor, too. We only had it once a year, but we had the glasses forever. I think there might have been jelly jars, too.
It wasn’t one of these was it? Also, there is more info on glass bottles on this website than you can shake a stick at! As a bottle collector I’ve used it before.
BTW - I too have several POM jars in our cupboard. My wife can’t get enough of the stuff!
Nope, that’s not it. There are small little raised clear glass stars around the top, just below the lip of the glass. I’m fairly sure the brand was available for sale well into the 80s, and I remember the lids to the jars were blue, and there was blue on the label. For all I know it was Hormel back then too, but I don’t think so.
