Help Name Our Son...

…even though we’re not sure we’re having a boy.

So, kittenlm is in a very knocked-up way, and we’re going through all the baby name books and looking at all the baby name web sites trying to figure out a good name if it’s a boy (we’ve got the “…if it’s a girl” part covered).

Damn, are we ever stuck.

So, let’s see what you folks think. We’ve got it narrowed to Gregory, Riley or Trevor. His middle name will be Joseph, and the last name is McLaughlin. Any thoughts?

I like Gregory. It goes well with your last name and shortens nicely to Greg.

Trevor is my choice. A fine old Welsh name. Gregory is okay but Riley is unbearably trendy.

I agree with asterion that “Gregory” is the best of the three choices. “Riley” is not only trendy, it’s one of the latest male names to become co-opted as a girl’s name. “Trevor” sounds too British, and doesn’t go well (IMHO) with “McLaughlin”. If you pick that option, I suspect the kid will want to be known as “T.J.” before long.

Joaquin! It’s my favorite boy name and someday I will convince someone to name their son that.

But, if you’ve already (foolishly, I might add) ruled Joaquin out, I say Trevor.

Why not start a trend and revive some names from 80-100 years ago. Both of my grandfathers had first names that were common then and are now virtually non-existent: Hubert (maternal) and Ira (paternal). I’ll bet that the dopers could come up with a couple dozen more in no time at all.
Ira Joseph McLaughlin - practically slides right off your tongue.
Per your 3 choices, I vote with the Gregory contingent. It has a nice sound to it.

[sub]Of course if you later have a daughter, you are morally bound to name her Marsha. :D[/sub]

I definitely like Gregory best of the three.

We were going to name our baby Joaquin Angel but we were surprised with an Isabella Rose.
But if I had to pick from your list I’d say Gregory, but only because Trevor and Riley are too trendy.

And here’s a super cool site for baby names, courtesy of our very own RTFirefly.

You can see how the popularity of any name has waxed and waned over the years. http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

I like Archibald.

But if you insist on one of the three, I’d definitely go with Gregory. Riley makes me think of girls - it’s been thoroughly taken over by the yuppie contingent and he’ll have six female Rileys in his kindergarten class. And Trevor’s a fine name, but at least right around my age there’s a lot of them, and it always seems funny when a kid has a name that was popular several years earlier. I’ve always liked the name Gregory, anyway. It’s phonetically very pleasant, it’s got a nice long history - what more could you want?

GEEZ PEOPLE! Remember that these kids have to go through school and college with these name. If I were a guy and my parents had named me Hubert, Ira, Archibald, William, Colin, Charles, Edward or any of the following, I’d divorce my parents and change my name.

Being female, I dont have to worry too much about my name (Amy to those who care) but even then, its NOT a name that I’d ever name a daughter. Thank Og it wasnt any of the other horrific names my parents picked for me eg.

Annabeth
Gabriella
Elisbeth (WTF???)
Jacinta
Mary
Jan (Again, WTF???)
I’m totally a Mickaela or an Alyssa.

BIG SORRY to those who may have those names or have named their kids with those names…I just dont like them for me

Ps. I like Riley.

Suggestion: Bailey?

Trevor.

Or Orson.

Or Atilla James.

Wow, your last name is McLaughlin?

How about Matthew, then?

Otherwise, I’ve always liked Kevin. Kevin Joseph McLauchlin.

My vote is for Riley.

So … it’s not Briston, huh?

Another vote for Gregory.

Since that unpleasantness in the 40’s, Adolph just doesn’t get a fair shake anymore.

Alfred Finnegan

Gregory - without question.
