About a year or so ago, my apartment company replaced all the windows in my apartment. I have a problem with them, but I’d like to see if I can fix it myself rather than call the company because they’re generally inept and slow to respond.
My old windows had a wood frame (nine panes on the bottom, single pane on top) and I think they used some sort of rope/weight system–at any rate, I could see the ropes. The new windows have a metal frame and weatherstripping, with a single pane on both the top and bottom. They slide up & down (don’t open inward or outward).
The problem is that three (out of five) windows will occasionally slide down from the TOP. That is, the top pane will slide down a few inches. I’ve tried shoving them up vigorously, using packing tape (which looks really tacky) to secure them, and fastening the lock mechanism. They don’t seem to be installed upside down since they look the same as the other two windows. Sometimes one of the windows will stay closed for weeks at a time, then slide down suddenly.
So, thoughts? Someone I know suggested nailing them shut, but all the frame parts I see are metal, and I don’t know whether I’d be able to drive a nail through it.
