Help needed from Marching Drummers

I have two 19-month old grandkids who love to march. So I bought the snare drum shown at:

I also bought the Verve MSC2 snare drumcarrier . For the sake of completeness, the link to the carrier is at bottom, but you don’t really need to see it. Anyway…

Only after ordering carrier, did I see the notation that it is for marching snare drums “with clip style bracket only.”

My question is, can you look at the drum (perhaps with the larger picture that is available) to see if it has a clip style bracket.

I tried to get technical support to determine this, but to no avail. All they had on duty at the website were rock drummers.

Here’s the link to the Verve MSC2 carrier. It’s the one that sells for $44.99

Ok, not a drummer, but 4 years of HS marching band, 3 years summer youth marching band , 3 years of DCI drum corps and 2 years CSUF marching band has placed me up close to more than a few marching drums.

If you look through the harnesses in your links they fall into two general styles, clip and J-hook.

That drum looks like part of a stationary drum kit, not part of a marching snare. Marching snares will have the appropriate brackets to mount to one of the above types of harnesses. There are plenty of proprietary brackets but most are fairly consistent. Color me shocked if an off the shelf kit drum would have the appropriate connection points for marching harnesses although I’m sure a competent shop could modify it to work.

Thanks very much, drachillix. I’ll have a local shop do the deed (I hope).

You bought a piccolo snare drum, not a marching band instrument. You’re not going to find a metal carrier that will fit it. I don’t know what a drum shop would do, either. Maybe you could get someone to weld it?

Did you say this is for 19-month old grand kids? If they were my kids, this would be a grandparent’s house toy. I urge you never to let them play with this unattended. That drum is not child-proof. There are hundreds of small parts that can come off and pose choking hazards. The same is true for the carriers. The drumsticks can be used to damage themselves, other children, your furniture, your home, your pets, etc. The sticks can splinter or break, presenting more choking hazards. In my opinion, this is not a child’s toy and should not be given to children so young.

Here is a better alternative at Target. Remove the strap so that you don’t have a strangulation issue. This is a hand drum that requires no sticks. Keeping a rhythm with an implement is really quite challenging. I teach children much older than 19 months and it is tough for them. Even with elementary kids, I teach rhythm through patchen, or leg patting. I don’t even use clapping, because the physical skill of hitting two moving targets together is actually rather advanced. (I should say that I don’t have any actual experience with this product, but I do have lots of experience in teaching music. I have been a percussionists for nearly thirty years and I have been teaching school band for fifteen years.)

I’m truly sorry. I should have been more specific.

The drum, the sticks, and the carrier are all for me. My grandkids have little batons and will lead our parade of 3.

Thanks for your concern and your recommendations, Drum God.

Ah, good. Now I can sleep well tonight without worry. Seriously, I was worried.

You sound like a fun granddad! (I assume granddad because I doubt grandma would go for all this racket!)

Yup. I’m the Granddad - PopPop, as the kids call me. My wife and I baby sit the boys every Thursday, usually at their house. And wouldn’t you know, UPS is scheduled to deliver all the stuff tomorrow while we’re in the next town with the kiddies.

On the bright side, I’ll have plenty of time to get the drum carrier problem ironed out, the drum assembled (if necessary) and time to practice, before auditioning for my grandchildren.

So, off I go to bed. Wish me luck on my percussive adventure!!
