Help re: Baltimore & Lexington Market

I live just outside of Washington DC, but would like to go to the Lexington Market in Baltimore just to see what it’s like - well, trying Faidley’s crab cakes -may- play a part in the foray there, as well as getting a taste of Berger cookies again.

Anyway, to try to make a long, boring story short, I don’t drive so am trying to get there on public transit. Should I take the MARC train or the Greyhound bus? There is also a DC Metrobus that goes from Greenbelt Metro station to BWI airport, and I think I’d be able to catch a Baltimore transit bus (or the light rail?) from BWI into Baltimore, but from there am just not sure how to get to Lexington Market. Is it even do-able? I know next to nothing about getting around Baltimore, unfortunately, but am willing to make a go of it. I’ve tried the MD MTA webpage, but am having trouble mostly because I don’t know my way around Baltimore at all. I’m not sure what the Baltimore transit is called either, so if someone could provide a link to their website, I may be able to figure out how to get to & from Lexington Market once I make it to Baltimore.

Note to mods: if this isn’t in the right forum, please feel free to move it. I put it in IMHO since I’m asking for opinions on how to get around. Thanks!

Did it earlier this year. You take the MARC to Baltimore, then use the light rail from the train station. (Yellow line, IIRC). It stops at Lexington Market. To go back, reverse the trip (but stay on the yellow line).

That place is fast-food heaven. I had the crab cakes, but there are probably about a hundred food stands there, all looking delicious.

Here’s the map: http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/lightrail/schedule/map.cfm

General info is here: http://www.mtamaryland.com/ Click on the light rail links.

One more clarification: the MARC stops at Penn Station on that map.

A couple of side notes:

  • It’s been a while for me, but this is probably not a place to hang out after dark. Fine during the day and all, but especially if you don’t know the area, make it a daylight hours trip.
  • Poe’s grave is in the vicinity. I couldn’t give good directions now, but it’s a few blocks from Lexington Market, IIRC. Also, I think the cemetary is locked at night, so unless you like to climb iron fences, make it a day thing.

Thanks for all the info, RealityChuck and ShibbOleth - that was just what I needed! And no worries about being up there after dark because I totally planned to do this during the daytime. I think we (my daughter and I) will probably take the MARC train up and back and we’re grateful for the info about the Yellow light rail line.

I’ve just heard so much about the Market and have wanted to go there for years - don’t know how I’m planning on shlepping stuff back from there (LOL) but I imagine we’ll probably have a good time eating our way thru the market at least. Crab cakes and the Berger cookies are definitely on my agenda.

Thanks again!

You can find good meat and fish there, too. I can’t recall what’s in there for baked goods.

There’s lots of markets like that around town, but Lex is definitely the biggest. But the neighborhood is just a little seedy. Not dangerous. Nothing to worry about.

There’s a good italian market within a walk from Lex market called Trinacria (or trinacria macaroni works). Google it if you’re into that.

Have a crab cake from Faidley’s for me. It’s been forever since I had a good, jumbo lump crabcake.
