Help save the Wii

I know, the Wii hardly needs any help as it continues to blast away the competition often posting better sales than Xbox360 and PS3 combined. But for many gamers, the Wii is not living up to its potential. See thread here.

What are your suggestions and/or game ideas for helping the Wii live up to its full potential?

My game idea is for a flight game (plane, Arwing, dragon, or Pit from Kid Icarus) using first person perspective. No nunchuck is necessary. Just hold the the Wii Remote sideways to simulate a two-handed joystick (control column) or put it into Mario Kart wheel accessory. The tilt of the controller should simulate whatever movement is needed. Push the remote forward to speed up and pull back to slow down, but no hovering. You can switch weapons and/or attachments with the D-pad and fire with either 1 or 2. The game should have an engaging story as well as being open-world. I don’t need lots of enemies, just fun ones.

Am I wrong? What do you think should be done?

Well, I don’t own any of the three consoles, but I have considered it.

Firstly, I would update the Wii to make the graphics equal to the other 2 systems. Doing this would allow games like GTA IV and the like to be released on it. It doesn’t need "Wii Motion’ controls for every game.

Secondly…it needs more games. It’s initial releases were impressive, but it is in a rut. I’m sure there are a few good recent games, but it’s a in a serious rut and needs a new “killer feature” game to come along.

By the way, I know my first point is impossible. I don’t think they are releasing Wii 2.0 that will run GTA IV or equivalent games. It’s just what I’d do to “save” it.

I’d like to see a good RPG sword fighting game. An engaging story is a must, obviously. I’d like to see movement done with the nunchuck and then when you get into fights you hold the wiimote like a sword. something along the lines of, but not copying exactly, Way of the Samurai would be crack to me (except, you know, I’d actually want it, unlike crack…)

A flight game would also be great, a new Kid Icarus is a must for the system, imo.

But even more than that, I’d love to see actual innovative uses of the wiimote to interact with the game world. There’ve been a few games that do this, but very very few. The wiimote is, most of the time, relegated to a gimmick where you shake or wag the thing and it’s pretty lame.

Also, I’d love to see the system pump out some more mature games (and by mature I don’t mean blood and gore and sex, I mean games with engaging stories meant for older (18+) gamers. Twilight Princess I felt was a more mature storyline than some of the previous zelda games) Now, there are some, but the vast majority of games are meant for kids or non-gamers and seem a bit silly to a guy like me (granted I still get down with Mario)

The Wii will not “arrive” until it has a game that’s the complete package. Innovative use of Wii Remote with a mature, engaging story and hours upon hours of gameplay.

Some use the remote well (Wii Sports, Boom Blox) but lack a strong narrative to draw me in (this is very important to me). Others have strong games (Zelda, Mario, hopefully MadWorld & Conduit) but are hardly innovative in their controls. Those games could be tweaked to be played with traditional controllers.

The nunchuck\Wiimote combo does not do it for me as a default control scheme. Instead, I think more games need to utilize the classic controller for the bulk of their gameplay and incorporate the motion controls for various features. True, it’s not as flashy but the thing that has driven me off the Wii time and time again has been imprecise controls. I’m imagining a game that’s played with the classic controller 70+% of the time. You only use the Wiimote if you need say a flash light or magic wand or whatever.

The whole situation reminds me just a bit of when CD technology was being introduced to games. Many game makers had no clue what to do with it beyond using it to cram crappy full motion video down our throats. Eventually, most figured out that the best way to use it was to expand and better already proven concepts and not simply use something new just for the sake of using something new. I have confidence that the same thing will happen with motion controls. They’ve proven to be very popular and will only become more so as talented developers turn their attention towards them.

I lurve the Wiiimote since I can have a more relaxed position when playing.
Well, as you said in the OP, it doesn’t need saving. Nintendo was smart in realizing that a threeway stand-off in a performance arms race would not be good, which Sony realizes just now, since the PS3 is only more of the same at too high a price. Branching out to get people who didn’t buy consoles, wasn’t interested, to realize how much fun it can be was a genius marketing decision. And the Wii is more of a marketing tool, and less of a console.

If I could wish for something, it’d be a Wii HD soon. All the great games that can be ported would be marvelous. I HATE playing Fallout 3 on a PC and having to deal with keyboard/mouse combo.

The idea of super graphics has never been a deal breaker for me. I’m interested in the gameplay. Some of the kids in the HS I teach got to play around with Super Mario on a NES a while ago and were totally captivated. After almost a quarter of a century, the game has not lost its appeal.

However, the production companies love the higher graphics, so most of the exciting game development happens there. Getting a Wii HD on the market, might make the people who play the 360 and the PS3 switch to Wii. Or maybe not.
Maybe it’s more for people like me who doesn’t have another console. I’ve been contemplating a 360 but if I knew a Wii HD was on the horizon, I’d gladly wait.

I don’t think a Wii HD would “solve” any problems. With that being said, I’d love to see better graphics.

Star Fox! With good flight controls! It would be absolutely perfect for the Wii, and I have a hunch Ninty knows that and has one in dev.

Nintendo also needs to court the Japanese 3rd parties. Castlevania Wii, anyone? I’d love to use the Nunchuck for a whip. Come on, Konami! Hopefully Mega Man 9 on the Virtual Console will help Capcom come over.

I like the starfox idea. Definitely needs to happen. But none of this starfox adventures crap. Starfox is a flight game, you’re in a plane (or occasionally in a tank, but for the love of the gods limit that to one or two levels, or give me an option) and you blast things, with lasers, in the face. I don’t want to wander around with a club on some crap planet with dinosaurs and pretend I’m Sturok (star fox, turok… meh, more coffee) or some crap. Give me laser and Slippy telling me to do a barrel roll and I’m a happy camper

Castlevania Wii would be great, but all 3d castlevanias have been crap, so a new 2d one would be great, though those are usually pushed to the DS. As for Capcom, well, who knows? But MegaMan 9 was released on all 3 consoles, so I wouldn’t count on it being impetus for Capcom to go to the Wii (unless, say, the sales were significantly higher on the Wii version or something).

I’d like to see a good rpg and a good racing sim. I have a feeling the latter is extremely unlikely, for some reason I don’t understand.

My friends are shooter-phobic, so the only time I do multiplayer shooters is on Starfox Adventures (Assault? Can’t remember which).

It doesn’t need better graphics; in any event, then it’d be a new console.

But a sword-based epic RPG? Great idea. You need something that uses the controls to use your sword without being too hard - something anyone can learn to play, scaling the difficulty up slowly, not just something that appeals to twitchy 13-year-olds. And it’s got to be epic, engrossing, a great story, the Wii version of “Knights of the Old Republic.” Make something as good as that, and nobody will compalin about graphics.

Do we have a good feudal Japan RPG yet?

How about an update to Inindo? Takes both the RPG element of a ninja in feudal japan with some strategy mixed in. I can imagine your character ninja-ing around in dungeons, hacking and slashing ronin and rival ninja.
