Help settle a massive debate regarding what the best meal of all time is.

Somewhere else on the net, a tournament was held and out of 300 starting foods (foods that have to be reciped foods or made up of other things, it can’t be a single thing by itself. So “Apple pie” is allowed, but “apples” aren’t)…the final four came down to these: Tacos (any kind), Ribeye Steak (made medium rare), Chicken Enchiladas, and Pizza Margherita.
Which of those do you think is the BEST FOOD OF ALL TIME?

Now,…I realize that one of those four things may not be, in your opinion, among the best food of all time. That’s the whole point behind this topic. I believed that a majority of people would have made vastly different choices. So if you’re wondering where something is (Like, say “huh? Where’s [example] fried chicken?”), then post that item (if that’s something you’ve have voted for in a best foods of all time tournament) and I will tell you what that thing lost to.
If it was in the tournament from the start, that is…and it probably was, because there were tons of good nominations.
I just feel sad for this one that things like Chicken Enchiladas and Pizza Margherita got to the end. Those things are good, yeah, but would you consider them the BEST FOOD OF ALL TIME? If not, say what you would.

In the meantime, I’m thinking the final will be the ribeye steak VS…something… and that the final will be very underwhelming.

It sounds like they got too much of an averaging effect that led to some very innocuous consensus choices.

My vote would be for a true crawfish boil. It has it all: loads of seafood per person as well as spicy potatoes, corn on the cob, onions and other things cooked in the same huge pot with a spice mix. Spread it all out on picnic tables covered in newspaper and you have a feast that can half a day or night for as many people as you want. The potatoes and corn are in case someone gets really hungry. You can’t get full on crawfish by themselves.

Hm, nothing crawfish was even in the tourny from the start. We had scallops and shrimp stuff and catfish stuff, but not crawfish stuff.

It’s obviously not one of the options given, although a nice USDA prime dry aged ribeye would make the top 10. For me, it’s a toss up between NY-style pizza or chicken biryani.

NY Style Pizza lost to Belgian Waffles in round 3.

I thought that was nuts too.

Steak is not a meal. It is a part of a meal. Tacos and chicken enchiladas are closer but still not meals unless served with rice and beans. Pizza (of any stripe) can be a meal, but not the greatest meal of all time.

Is your poll the best food of all time or the best meal of all time? Clarification needed before I vote.

A plate of steak and nothing else? No thanks.

That is a shame. What about a New England clam bake (it is a whole lot more than just clams)? It is a similar idea but even more expensive and labor intensive than a crawfish boil. I consider it one dish as well as a full meal because it is all cooked together in the same fire pit albeit in large quantities. You can’t get the same results cooking the ingredients individually.

Okay, forgive me, the tournament is about reciped foods then, not so much meals. It has to be one food, composed of other things, as opposed to a base food…so “meals” was thrown around.

I voted for rib-eye, rare. As it happens, the corner market has the best rib-eyes I’ve found, so it’s quite convenient.

Now, the Best Meal Of All Time is a tricky issue. Tastes change from day to day and from hour to hour. I might like a good steak, but sometimes I want a BLAT. And then you have people’s eating history. I grew up in Southern California with its Mexican influence. (We had a maid come in once a month, who also cooked scratch-made Mexican dinners.) I lived in Japan when I was little, and I liked that. When I was a kid, nothing was better than beef sukiyaki! (Although in Japan, roasted sweet potatoes were a real treat.) I seek out foods from different cultures, and often try to replicate them.

OTOH, Mrs. L.A. was raised on food from cans and boxes, and fast food. She appreciates my cooking (A lot! She especially likes my escargots and chiles relleno  ) but she’s fine with fruit bowls and pizza. Or you have people who grew up in ‘meat-and-potatoes’ regions who may not have been exposed to different ethnic foods. To them, a nice rib-eye may be TBMOAT, and jambalaya might be completely unknown.

So the real answer to the poll is ‘It depends.’

Well, since “Tacos (any kind)” is an answer, put me down for “Sandwich (any kind)”: you get points for Reuben, and points for BLT! Philly Cheesesteak or Meatball Sub! Shrimp Po’Boy with a damn fine remoulade! In fact, of the remaining choices, put me down for ‘taco’, since, hey, it misses ‘sandwich’ the closest!

Nope. Both New England Clam Chowder was in it (it lost to Peach Cobbler in round 2) and Manhattan Clam Chowder (it lost to Cedar Roasted Salmon in round 1).

Fried Clams were also in it, but lost to Apple Dumplings in the first round.

Come on now, don’t be so picky.

As for the poll and which of the four, I would pick the steak, though a MR New York steak is my favourite.
But my own favourite meal? I have an addiction to good food and am blessed to have a wife who loves to cook, as well as a son-in-law who is a world class executive chef. My favourite food at this time in life: chicken cacciatore. Made by my wife.

It has to be a specific sandwich. All that you named were in it, though. Reuben made it the farthest, to round 5 (of 7) and then lost to Lasagna. Shrimp Po’boy lost to Schwarma in round one.
…and Meatball Sub lost to Reuben when it had the nasty luck of going against it in round 2. Bad luck it went against another great sandwhich, eh?

NY Strip Steak was in it. Many, many steaks were. Ribeye is the only one left standing.

NY Strip Steak lost to Apple Pie in round 4 (of 7).

I can live with ribeye as the choice. If I consider options for the Other category, I’ve got too many choices to make up my mind.

I’m a little surprised to see something as specific as pizza margherita up there, especially right next to “any kind” of tacos. Pizza in general might give steak a run for its money, but I’m not a big fan of the classic margherita. (If we’re restricting our ingredients to mozzarella, basil and tomato, you can’t beat insalata caprese.)

And chicken enchiladas? Seriously?! I love enchiladas, but chicken is at the very bottom of my preference for filling.

Name one…or two. See if it was in the tourny as a whole and, if so, what it lost to.

Me, I was disappointed over Pork Chops and Fried Chicken. I was hoping FC would go all the way, but alas, it lost the last round (to tacos).

Just so I’m clear, though: does “Tacos (any kind)” include shrimp tacos right along with steak tacos? Plus maybe chicken tacos?

Reuben is my go-to answer, but so long as you’re explaining: what did BLT lose to?

Yes, but it was decided that tacos still has enough limited amount when compared to sandwiches, so sandwiches needed specifying but tacos didn’t.

BLT lost just last round (round 6) to chicken enchiladas.

Very crazy, I know.

Hey, quit trying to justify your silly choices and tie-breakers!

The greatest meal in the world is:

Breakfast - chicken-fried steak w/sausage gravy, eggs fried hard, well-done hash browns, sourdough toast, coffee and OJ. And a Bloody Mary.

Lunch - Fish tacos from a street vendor in Ensenada. Beer.

Dinner - Steak tartare, wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, 20 oz. ribeye steak, rare, creamed corn or steamed asparagus, a good California Zinfandel, and either an Armagnac or Grand Marnier Cinquantenaire for dessert.

Somebody else pays.
